On this day, September 15th in 1944, U.S. Marines landed on Peleliu, a Japanese-held island in the Palau Islands during World War II.

The U.S. objective was to capture the island’s airfield and eliminate Japanese forces that could threaten Allied operations in the western Pacific. What followed became one of the most intense and costly battles of the Pacific War.

Japanese defenders had heavily fortified the island, using caves, tunnels and interconnected defensive positions in the rugged coral terrain. Rather than defending the beaches alone, they fought from deep positions and inflicted heavy casualties on the advancing Americans.

The battle lasted until November 27, 1944.
