[1/9] Hiya, I’m Tarzan 👋

I write a newsletter called EMAILS, BUT BETTER that teaches consent-based email marketing to course creators and service providers.

It’s read by 11K+ consenting adults i.e. smart marketers looking for new ways of being on the internet.

The need-to-know about me:

> Reads way too many novels
> 🏳️‍🌈 and 🇨🇦
> Youngest child and notorious brat
> Will respond to any pronoun (call me daddy 😉)

My company offers programs and services that teach email marketing and newsletters, with lots of hands-on support.

Subscribe to my newsletter to find out more about all of that —> link in bio,

Brat tamers welcome.

P.S.

Don’t tell Insta, but you can find me on LinkedIn.

[2/9] Get the emails that will make you want to write more emails.

I wanna fill your inbox with stories and strategies you haven’t heard anywhere else.
These unfiltered emails will show you:

>> Ways the online course industry is changing and how to (re)build trust
>> What consent-based email marketing looks like
>> Ways to go beyond lead magnets and other "bribes" and nurture actual readers for your newsletter

You want ‘em?

ATTN: Dreamers and disruptors.

Some of my best (and worst) business ideas were conceived on drugs.

[In this case 🍄and 🍬, but I find the term “plant medicine” a bit snooty. Drugs are drugs. But let’s save that for another post.]

One of my better ideas was POWER, my 9-month mastermind. I give a skeptical chuckle when people talk about “downloads” but that’s what this felt like.

What I saw (and delivered) was an intimate experience where a group of brave humans could grow their businesses while also dismantling some of the very same systems that got them where they are today.

I learned so much from my members.
As much as they learned from me, and more probably.

I grew five sizes, and so did they.

Power is a circle not a pyramid, which makes it different from most of the programs you see online (including mine.)

If you know about my work and you want to work with me, this is the best way.

DM me if you want to talk about it. It’s begins July 11 and there are a couple spots left.

Applications close next Friday, June 21.

She nods her chin down and looks up with her eyes with a look that says, “Are you kidding?” Her armpit hair is almost visible and frankly, she looks pretty gay.

[4/9] I have a new email course coming this September.

It might be called “Newsletter Startup” but honestly, I’m not sure yet.

It’s everything I’m learning about newsletter growth that the online business scene hasn’t caught on to yet.

Including…

> list-building without lead magnets (amen, right?)
> how to get your first 1K subscribers
> selling for people who find webinar formulas cringeworthy

…plus the basics of early-stage tagging and segmentation, and easy consent-building strategies for newsletter operators.

[5/9] This year I pivoted from talking about coercion to talking about consent. (Whew! That’s a relief. 😓)

Consent is the antidote to coercion.

For everyone asking themselves, “Is there a way to sell my services and programs that doesn’t feel gross?”
YES!

It’s consent-based marketing.

You can sell without flashing red timers at your subscribers and threatening a life of loserdom if they don’t buy in the next 3 seconds.

And it’s important that you do!

If you don’t take care to unlearn the coercive strategies that you’ve fallen prey to, you will harm others because those strategies are all you know.

There’s another way.

Consent-based marketing feels awesome and converts customers who actually want to be there.

Wanna try it?

[6/9] I learned about consent from a children’s book at 37 years old.

I wish it didn’t take me that long but here we are.

Consent didn’t just change my s*x life, it changed the way I parent, how I relate to my friends, and the way I sell.

If you want a new framework for selling, use this one:

Consent has 3 characteristics:

—> Freely given
If you can’t say no, then you can’t say yes. Leave room for people to say no, instead of forcing a quick yes.

—> Informed
You can’t say yes if you don’t know what you’re saying yes to. Think pricing transparency and affiliate link disclosure.

—> Ongoing / Revocable
Yes once doesn’t mean yes forever. Think opt-out links and hassle-free refund policies.

When you build consent into your business, you will feel less resistant to marketing, and probably like your customers a lot more.

Want to see it in action?

[7/9] Roasting newsletters = my not-so-secret passion, and the reason my students come back repeatedly for another round of my email program.

> Let me show you where you buried the hook.
> Let me show you how to add momentum to your email so that “too long” just isn’t an issue.
> Let me show you how to decide which sentences to cut.
> Let me shred your choice of font size and paragraph spacing!
> Let’s create the habit-forming sections your newsletter needs to keep readers coming back.

I’ll be gentle, I promise.

Next round opens September 2024. Waitlist in bio.

[8/9] It’s okay to ask, “Is there another way?”

It doesn’t mean you’re lazy or afraid of hard work.

Lean into your discomfort around the tried and true strategies we’ve all been taught. There probably is another way.

Asking for another way doesn’t mean you have a mindset problem, it usually means you’re thinking deeply about your marketing and you don’t want to perpetuate harmful strategies.

Debating strategy should be encouraged in the communities we lead and the ones we join.

Celebrate it.

Have the hard conversation.

[9/9] Everyone has a grammar or spelling pet peeve.

Mine’s exclamation marks. I edit them out of student emails every single week.

“This exclamation point is tacky,” I’ll say in my email critiques, ruthlessly highlighting and hitting ⌘-X.

What’s your grammar pet peeve?

SLIDE1: Automatically adding people to your email list because they downloaded a freebie is the email equivalent of “I bought her dinner so she owes me.” No, she doesn’t. Can we talk about this? SLIDE 2: Consent = new subscriber ticks a box that says, “I want to join your email list.” Consent ≠ any of the following: SLIDE 3: Not Consent: downloaded your, free guide, bought something from you, booked a consultation, signed up to a webinar
downloaded a free class, requested a quote, left items in my shopping cart SLIDE 4: An opt-in landing page pulled up on a tablet. Below the form where a person would normally enter their name and email there is an extra line of copy that says “want my weekly emails too?” and then two checkboxes where you can choose “yes please” or “no thanks” before they hit the button to submit their email. This part of the form is circled in red handwriting.
SLIDE 5: Giving something away for free doesn’t equal consent from a subscriber. Ask for explicit consent, always. In life and in business. Background image on all slides is a young white woman email marketing expert with a pretty gay haircut sitting at her desk and smiling
