Outtakes from our portrait shoot of award-winning production designer Paul Austerberry.

Paul won the Academy Award and BAFTA Award for production designing Guillermo del Toro’s 2017 film The Shape of Water.

As Mike and I were setting up our lights and camera I asked him what it was like having his name and his team’s announced as the winners for Production Design at the 2018 Academy Awards. “Terrifying”, he replied, smiling. He went on to paint us a dream-like sequence of walking a gauntlet of movie stars and moguls onto the huge stage of The Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, being handed the Oscar and looking out into a sea of A-list talent and creatives. When I saw his acceptance speech a few days later on YouTube I saw a man who thanked his crew first, the vision of his director and all those who helped make the production a reality.
The character of who he is spoke volumes though none of his words pointed back at him.

A stop motion piece of a spinning 3D-printed model of a patient’s enlarged heart for University of Toronto Magazine.

UofT works with Toronto General Hospital’s Munk Cardiac Centre in creating 3-D printed hearts to greatly enhance surgeons’ pre-surgical examination of cardiac patients.
