Spikey Graphics Yet another Graphic Designer....... Making it up as I go along since 2005

08/12/2025

With a matter of days left for SpikeyGraphics and another potential last finished tonight its really wrapping up, I need to say thank you to Mike Quartley of Merch Monkey - Design, Print & Embroidery, he was the next part of my story, I cant even begin to imagine how many items of designed for Mike, from truck shows to the early days mugs, tshirts, carnival bits, truck wraps, stock car signs, metal plaques, posters and so much more, we've had many laughs, a few breakdowns, some heartache and more than a few nags of "is it done yet" but looking back its been a rollercoaster of things I never thought id do. Thanks Mike and Donna x

I also need to thank Gemma of Embroidery By Gemma, a little while after starting up with Mike I also linked up with Gemma to do some stock car team merch, mainly tshirts etc and its some of the most chilled designing I have ever got to do, not to mention designs for some pretty cool people/teams/families, never stressed and always polite, Im pretty sure I caused her much more stress than she ever did me!!! Thank you (and Sorry!!) Gem x

So I think really that wraps it up.
The only work I have left that may just spill into next year is Bills meeting poster which Crispen has kindly agreed to let me do again for 2026, obviously that has meaning for so many of us.

SpikeyGraphics 2005~2025 might be back one day, might not, if I ever made you something, thank you for your trust, I hope you liked whatever it was I made you!

Half way through the last year, I hope some of you have found some interest in these 🤣
Really the next step in the SG story is pretty tame, it went quiet for a long while, I was busy outside of racing, my opportunities to go racing due to work and life had thinned out and so the work had gone quiet too, I had gone from close to 50 files of work a year to 10 at the most.
It was pretty quiet for a long period till in 2019, Crispen Rosevear would come knocking about doing the design work for Autospeed Motorsport Promoters posters, it was an opportunity that hit home and was a huge proud moment for me.
The early ones were a little odd but once I found a groove I think we have turned out some great alternative posters, I've always tried to do things in my own style and way and I hope this has transferred across to you guys.
In the 7 years I've been at it there are loads of posters I've adored and many I've hated, but the opportunity to showcase most of the big races in our sport in that time is a proud badge of honour for me, I have tried to upload a selection from 2019-2024, there are a few exceptions, the F2 WF artwork, and most of Bills artwork, I'll upload them separately another time.

The next part to my memory lane comes as a direct link to this Autospeed pairing in 2019, one that brought me more work than I ever thought, I had to work with a man about a Truck Show in Devon.........

The website and printing era:
Still at college, still doing odd bits of designing, still doing racing skins along comes an opportunity to do a stock car website, I had been playing with some website stuff but nothing special, Tim Farrell's "sixsix7" was a popular site and allowed me to get creative with purpose, its popularity spurned more opportunities for websites and at one point I was managing about 6 but it ultimately wouldn't last as Facebook and social media had taken over from websites.
The sixsix7 site lasted longer than most though and because of it I went racing A LOT, somewhere in there the idea that I fancied to print merch happened, I bought some very nice equipment for the time and set about printing mugs, mouse mats and tshirts, I personally hate them now looking back but some of the mugs are still going now 100s of washes later!!! My Timmy mouse mat is in use right now, although its looking worse for wear now!!
Ultimately this was an important part of my history, I realised im awful at money management and when doing it all for money I enjoyed it massively less, I was happier doing cool stuff for my friends, I had a full time job, stay in my lane.

Some pretties uploaded, incl some original merch, and some designs from this time.

The year marches on, I guess the next part of the SG story was online racing on the modded nascar Heat game, creating the online skins for myself and others was great fun, I made some more friends there that I still know now, some have gone on to be the big real deal in the real racing world! I don't have too many pretty images of this time but I've found a few rough ones to laugh about!

It gave me a lot of creative freedom in a style and environment I loved, at the same time as this I was doing a two year art and design course at college and that gave me access to Photoshop for the very first time, I used it to make every skin I ever did, for the first few years that was only at college on break times!!! Nothings changed, I had no life then either!!!!
I did go on to do some for the updated Rfactor version but a rubbish PC meant I never could play it well enough to enjoy it and carry on with skins, so in time I drifted away from this, by which time I was driving and attending lots of real racing, it was around this time a turtle came knocking about a website, sixsix7.co.uk......

So for 20 years of SpikeyGraphics I said I would share some bits and pieces this year and as I started looking through the oldest files I have to hand still I wondered just how much do I actually have saved, well it turns out bar a few months that were lost I have everything I have ever made since 2006, and if I was ever to find the old disks id imagine I have 2005 somewhere too!

The files add up to:

17,086 Files in 1,711 folders totalling 203Gb.

Thats not including any photos that I used to take back in the day which is another 41,000 files and around 190Gb.

To think it all started making signatures for the Ftooz forum, I don't still have those originals but here is a few that have managed to be saved from 2005, god they are awful, I made them on MS Publisher as it was all I had back then but they bring back some memories, I've been lucky enough over 20 years to make some amazing things for people top to bottom in our sport and now some of those amazing people aren't with us any longer .
