New spotlight on the blog:

we’re sharing the story behind the new website for the Warren County, VA Sheriff’s Office Foundation.

This project was about building more than a good-looking site. The Foundation needed a clear, credible digital home where community members, donors, families, sponsors, and partners could quickly understand the mission and find the right next step.

The finished website helps visitors explore supported programs, learn about upcoming events, recognize donor involvement, and take action through donations or community engagement.

For Short Story Marketing, this is the kind of work we love: strategy, structure, design, content, and community impact all working together.

You didn’t start a business to become your own:

SEO person
brand strategist
web designer
developer
content creator
marketing strategist
social media manager
digital expert

But somehow, that’s what DIY turns into.

And the problem isn’t that small business owners can’t figure it out.

They usually can.

The problem is that all those pieces need to work together.

Your brand affects your website.
Your website affects your content.
Your content affects your marketing.
Your marketing affects trust.

That’s where Short Story Marketing comes in.

Not piece by piece.

As a whole digital footprint.

Community-led design comes with unique challenges: multiple voices, board approval, practical needs, and long-term maintenance.

We recently supported a community organization with logo development, stakeholder-friendly design direction, and a flexible website foundation they could continue building on internally.

For nonprofits, committees, and volunteer-led groups, good design is not just about how something looks at launch. It is about whether people can understand it, use it, approve it, and keep it moving forward.

Meet the "Get It Done" girl behind Short Story Marketing.

Phone wrangler.
Email untangler.
Website whisperer.
Client champion.
Digital duct-tape specialist.
Behind-the-scenes backbone.

Yeah… she wears a lot of hats. Most days she's wearing all of them before lunch.

If you've ever called Short Story Marketing, there's a good chance Margie is the friendly voice on the other end, calm, capable, and already three steps ahead of the problem.

Website glitch? She's on it.
Email acting weird? She's on it.
Client needs help and doesn't know where to start? She's definitely on it.

What she does best?
Making the chaos disappear before anyone notices it was there.

Most people don't want a ticket number and a three-day wait. They want someone who actually picks up, actually understands the problem, and actually fixes it.

That's Margie's lane.

She keeps the gears turning quietly in the background, troubleshooting, communicating, following up, and making sure nothing falls through the cracks. The kind of work that's invisible when it's done right.

She connects the dots between clients, technology, and the team to make the whole operation run smoother than it has any right to.

She builds confidence.
Calm under pressure.
Quick to solve.
And the kind of support every team secretly can't live without.

Meet the "Next Step" guy behind Short Story Marketing.

Internet guy. Early web pioneer. Momentum engineer. Website strategist. Click psychologist.

Yeah… he wears a lot of hats too. Has for a while.

Bill started working with the internet before most people knew what to call it. Back then, "connecting" meant mysterious modem noises, blinking lights, and a creative string of punctuation depending on how the session was going.

Since then?
Military intelligence. College computer centers. Marketing & sales for Steve Jobs' NeXT computer company. Managing IT teams in the Middle East.

And eventually… websites.

For the first few years, he ran the whole operation from a boat he rebuilt himself — cruising up and down the East Coast while his clients sat in offices.

They had conference rooms. Bill had tides.

One of his early sites, FireCalc®, a retirement calculator, got cited by The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, and others.

Not bad for a guy working off the water.

What he does best?

Turning curiosity into momentum.

Bill's grad school advisor was Dr. Charles Kiesler, psychologist, former APA president, who spent years studying how people commit to decisions.

His finding? People don't leap. They step.

A click. A quick read. A demo. One small action that moves someone from "just browsing" to "I'm interested."

Another of his professors was Herbert Simon, one of the founding fathers of artificial intelligence, back when AI was an academic subject, not a headline.

Turns out understanding how people decide is pretty useful when you're building websites.

He connects the dots between websites, messaging, marketing strategy, and customer psychology to build something bigger than just "a website."

He builds momentum.

Long internet history. Boat-tested entrepreneurship. Small steps that lead to big results.

Meet the “Big Idea” girl behind StoryStoryMarketing

Graphic artist.
Actual artist.
Big Idea Girl.
B2B Cupid.
Art director.
Website designer.
Social media strategist.

Yeah… she wears a lot of hats, and somehow makes it all look easy.

Creativity for her isn’t a 9–5 thing. It’s constant. The brain never really shuts off. Ideas show up while driving, while working, while drinking coffee… sometimes at 2am when most people are asleep.

What she does best?
She helps businesses see the missing doors (target markets) they didn’t even know were there.

The opportunities.
The angles.
The big ideas hiding right in front of them.

Most businesses are too busy running the day-to-day to see the creative possibilities sitting in plain sight. That’s where Creative "Elf" comes in.

She connects the dots between; design, marketing, brand voice, websites, and social media, to create something bigger than just “graphics.”

She builds **momentum.**

Fun-size personality.
Oversized ideas.
And results that speak for themselves.

Some stories don’t belong in the cloud.
They belong on shelves. In hands. Passed down.

We recently partnered with Ancestry Storybooks, a woman-owned business built on decades of professional desktop publishing experience, to design a logo and website that reflects what they truly create: family legacy.

This wasn’t about trends. It was about trust, craftsmanship, and making something that lasts.

Referrals fuel our business, and they also fuel our passion.

This client was referred to us, and we were ecstatic to hear how much they loved the results. We decided to pitch a different approach with the standard logo/brand, and they loved it as we collaborated together as a full blown team effort. Launching their newly custom website that’s more than just pretty; it’s designed for lead generation and optimized with SEO from the ground up.

Happy clients, growing businesses, and trusted referrals… that’s what it’s all about.

From print to pixel, we’ve been busy turning big ideas into bold visuals. Over the past few months, our team has brought major graphic design, print media, and digital media projects to life, branding, brochures, banners, websites, social campaigns, you name it.

Print still slaps.
Digital? Always evolving.
Strategy? Built in.
Creativity? That's our fuel.

Huge shoutout to our creative lead, Kim Green, for pushing every design past the expected and into the unforgettable.
