As designers and engineers, we use mathematical models to homogenize the people we design for. Uncertainty is assumed away as degrees of error or deviations from the norm. It’s dismissed as an edge case."

In case you missed it, we were able to participate in Kat Holmes' Inclusive Design workshop earlier this fall while she was in Detroit! We gained a new perspective and approach to our design practices. In this article, she shares how designing for inclusivity will benefit all of us, especially in the digital age.

We had a great time at the gala on Friday! We left feeling inspired by the countless stories & courage of survivors of persecution, as well as the many people working together to make Freedom House Detroit a holistic solution for asylum seekers.

Globally, there are over 1 billion people with disabilities & 6.4 billion people who are temporarily disabled (World Report on Disability, 2011).

Today, in an inclusion workshop with Kat Holmes, we challenged the idea of how we quantify, assess, and stereotype the average user. We learned to ask the question, “who exactly is normal?” and learned that disabilities can be redefined as a series of “mismatched human interactions.” We are grateful to broaden our perspective on design thinking, move away from a one size fits all mindset, and ask better questions in order to reach more inclusive design solutions.
