He is equally at home interacting with clients as he is in the thick of design, and similarly relishes seeing a project from initial concept through to print and product production. Todd’s awareness of global trends, knowledge of brand strategy and understanding of consumer behaviour results in an ability to perfectly tailor products and brand. After spending the past week in Xiamen, I had the chance to visit Nanputuo Temple before walking along the waterfront and seeing some striking modern architecture.

What fascinated me was not the contrast, but how naturally these two worlds coexist.

China holds onto thousands of years of culture while embracing innovation and technology at extraordinary scale.

As a designer, I find that balance inspiring. The strongest design systems often work in the same way - respecting what came before, while creating something that can evolve and grow.

Good packaging at scale isn’t about making every product louder.

When you’re working across ranges, formats and SKUs, packaging has to work first. It needs to be clear, consistent and easy to navigate before it gets the chance to be clever.

The systems matter just as much as the creativity. Small design decisions add up quickly and what feels minor on one pack can have a big impact when it’s repeated across a whole range.

It’s the kind of work I’ve come to really value - building packaging that works well as a system and holds together over time, without losing clarity or craft.

What began as a two-month consulting post turned into four incredible years, working with one of South Africa’s most loved and trusted retailers.

During that time, while still running my own business, I worked as a dedicated consultant at Clicks head office in Cape Town, overseeing the role of Packaging Design Manager and helping lead the brand and packaging design studio. Together, we rebuilt and repositioned the studio, grew a world-class team, evolved how the studio operated, and delivered packaging across some of the retailer’s key brands.

I’m incredibly proud of what we created together and of the team that continues to do such impactful work.

A thank you to the leadership team, especially Catia, Karien and Mel for the trust and support throughout this time.

As this chapter closes, I’m stepping back from this embedded consulting role and placing a renewed focus on Todd Anderson Design, alongside my ongoing work with partners and clients.

Grateful for the people and the work we did together.

Today marks exactly five years since I starting Todd Anderson Design. What a journey its been. From the humble beginnings in a shared communal workspace, to developing brand and packaging design for some of the world most loved and recognise products.

We've also partnered with many smaller, start up businesses and challenger brands, helping them to establish a unique standout presence for both the company and their products.

Over the past year and a half, I've had the incredible opportunity of working closely as a consultant for one of the countries largest retailers, where we've developed a new studio environment and been able to move brands into fresh and exciting territory. It's been wonderful to of been able to play a small role in all of this.

Also last year, I was able to travel to China, to spend time with one of my most valued clients. I hadn't travelled to China since before the pandemic, and it was wonderful for us to work closely together again.

For me however, the most important part of the past five years in business has been the people that I have met along the way. From working with respected business leaders (and even a few celebrities), to being able to employ and nurture new and emerging talent, has without any doubt, given me the most learning and value within this time. To everyone that has played a role, who has encouraged, supported, listened, laughed offered their time and energy (you know who you are)... A HUGE THANK YOU!

At the end of 2021, Todd Anderson Design signed two significant clients, which sees us becoming one of the fastest growing brand and packaging design studios. That doesn't just include work with our valued local partners, but also in the UK, US and Australia. Over the coming months, I am excited to share some of the new work that the business has been involved with. 

In addition, the consulting side of my work is still in full swing and I continue to enjoy visiting the offices of design agencies, retail partners and brand owners to help with their creative direction, running studios and managing teams.

Michael Bierut is without doubt one of the most admired and respected designers of our time. Ive had the great fortune to meet Michael twice and both times I have walked away feeling incredibly inspired by his immense knowledge of design. Even with his notoriety and industry standing, he comes across as unassuming, humorous and with a great deal of warmth. He was a real pleasure to speak with about design. He has hosted the Cape Town Design Indaba for many years and this is where on both occasions, I had been lucky enough to meet him.

Micheal Bierut has won many design awards. He previously worked as vice president of graphic design at Vignelli Associates. In 1990 he joined Pentagram's New York office as a Partner where he continues today to run a team of designers, working across many disciplines of design.

I'm a huge fan of Michael’s work and achievements. I’m a regular visitor to the ‘Design Observer’ a website to which he was the founding writer. Bierut's book ‘79 Short Essays on Design’ is at pride of place within my bookshelf. Its a super book that you can either pick it up for a quick read or settle back for the afternoon with. Its one of those books that I never get bored of and I find myself going back to again and again. I often find myself mentioning parts of the book to my team and I am always suggesting they should go out and buy a copy for themselves.

An Overview of the book
A collection of essays by Michael Bierut, Pentagram partner, cofounder of the website Design Observer, and AIGA board member. Bierut is one of the best respected and most-beloved writers within the graphic design field, a spokesman for the profession, and a man pretty much universally admired within the academy and among practitioners. This collection includes writings from the 1980s through today.
