Jeras Boran

Jeras Boran Since 1990, Jeras has been more than a farm. This is not just our signature. It’s our story, our passion, our love, our stud. Here, genetics is a craft. A calling.

It’s a living story — a quiet promise kept in faith and harvests, in the rhythm of seasons and the silence of early mornings. It’s a living story — a quiet promise
kept in faith and harvests,
in the rhythm of seasons and the silence of early mornings. We trace bloodlines with purpose — not to impress, but to improve. To pass on what endures: strength, fertility, adaptability. Traits born of the land, and shaped by the hands that know it.

Welcome to 2026.
A year of breeding with purpose. A year of raising the standard.
The Jeras way doesn't change with the calendar - it deepens.
Let's build something that lasts.

⭐Jeras Blueprint - The Hump

The hump is iconic to the Boran - but its development and position reveal important information.

The Standard of Excellence describes the form, position, and faults of the hump clearly. It should be "placed directly above and in line with the front legs, rounded, well developed and forming part of the body."

Here's what experience has taught me: excessive hump development in cows and heifers is usually a sign of infertility. It correlates with older age at first calving in heifers and longer calving intervals in mature cows.

Hump position in breeding animals is generally an indicator of purity. However, even in pure animals you occasionally find a slightly forward-placed hump. I see this as purely cosmetic with no economic value - so I don't discriminate against it.

The hump should complement the animal's overall structure, not dominate it. Balance matters more than size.

Heat-smart by nature.
The Boran handles high temperatures with ease - not by accident, but by design. Centuries of selection in harsh African environments created a breed built for heat.

The dewlap tells you more than you think.

As a Zebu breed, the Boran developed in the tropics - and the dewlap isn't decorative. It increases surface area for heat dissipation and helps regulate body temperature in hot climates. The hump and dewlap are functional adaptations for survival.
But here's what I've learned over the years: the dewlap often indicates chest width, especially in photographs.

When the dewlap stops in front of the forelegs instead of flowing between them, it's usually a sign of insufficient chest width. A properly developed dewlap that extends between the front legs reflects the width and capacity you want to see through the chest.

The dewlap should also reflect the animal's s*x. Bulls carry heavier, more substantial dewlaps. Cows should show feminine refinement even in the dewlap development.
It's a small detail that tells a bigger story about structure and capacity.

As the year winds down, we honour the herd that carried us through every season.

Strong genetics. Strong bloodlines. Strong foundations for what's ahead.

The work doesn't stop when the calendar changes - but we take a moment to recognise what's been built here.

2025 tested us. The herd proved itself. Again.

Every great story has a beginning.
In our herd, it starts with cows like this - maternal strength shaped by the land and selected with intention.
The result?
Bulls that carry our name, our promise, and our genetics forward.

Behind every animal sold is a relationship built.

These testimonials remind us why we do what we do:
helping farmers grow, guiding new breeders, and watching Jeras genetics flourish in different parts of the country.

Thank you to every farmer who chooses Jeras.

⭐Jeras Blueprint: From Head to Toe

Where the eyes sit on the head says a lot about the animal's functionality.
The ideal is for the eyes to be positioned in the middle third of the head. Animals with eyes set too high often struggle to maintain condition compared to the rest of the herd - they're the ones that look drawn when everyone else is holding flesh.

Eyebrow ridges also matter. They protect against sun, insects, and injury, but extremes should be avoided. Too much development can lead to entropion, especially in bulls.

Personal preference: female animals with three folds on each eyebrow often show excellent s*x type and quality. Cows with visible veins on the nose wings are also preferred - it's a sign of refinement and femininity.

These small details tell a bigger story about balance, efficiency, and long-term functionality.
