📍 uMhlanga Promenade, KwaZulu-Natal 🇿🇦

Few views say uMhlanga quite like this one. 🌊❤️🤍

Stretching along Durban’s northern coastline, the uMhlanga Promenade offers beautiful views of the Indian Ocean and takes you past one of the area’s most recognisable landmarks, the iconic red-and-white uMhlanga Lighthouse.

The lighthouse isn’t just there for the photographs. It serves as a navigational aid along this busy stretch of coastline, helping guide vessels travelling along the coast and towards Durban Harbour.

The promenade itself has become one of uMhlanga’s signature experiences, a place for an early-morning walk, run, an evening stroll or simply stopping for a few minutes to take in the coastline.

And nearby you’ll find another uMhlanga landmark: the distinctive whalebone-shaped pier, which Durban Tourism notes was named the most beautiful pier in the world by CNN.

With the ocean on one side, uMhlanga’s skyline on the other and that famous lighthouse standing between them, it’s easy to see why this remains one of the most photographed stretches of coastline in KZN.

📸 Swipe through for a look at the promenade and lighthouse.

Have you walked the uMhlanga Promenade before?

🌊 ISIPINGO RIVER MOUTH BREACHED AFTER HEAVY RAINS

This is the moment the Isipingo Beach river mouth was opened to the ocean following continuous heavy rainfall across Durban.

With water levels in the Isipingo River and estuary rising rapidly, authorities made the decision to breach the sandbank and allow the backed-up water to escape into the sea, helping reduce the threat of flooding to nearby low-lying communities.

Already, water had begun pushing into surrounding areas, including the nearby soccer field, highlighting just how quickly levels were rising.

The breaching of a river mouth can be a critical intervention during periods of intense rainfall. By creating a channel through the sandbank, accumulated river water is given a direct route into the ocean rather than continuing to rise upstream.

🌧️ Durban has experienced significant rainfall over the past two days, with rivers and waterways across the city under pressure.

🌊 USHAKA PIER | DURBAN

It’s one of the most recognisable structures along this part of Durban’s beachfront but depending on when you visited, you might know it by a different name.

uShaka Pier stretches out into the Indian Ocean alongside uShaka Marine World, offering incredible views back towards Durban’s beachfront and out across the ocean.

For years, many Durbanites came to know it as Moyo Pier, thanks to the iconic Moyo restaurant that occupied the building at the end of the pier. Today, that space has a new chapter, with Ku D’ Ta taking over the restaurant location.

But there’s more to this pier than restaurants and ocean views.

The structure is also associated with uShaka Marine World’s seawater intake system, helping supply ocean water to the marine facility. Meaning there’s important infrastructure working beneath a place most of us simply visit for the view.

It’s a small piece of Durban that has changed over the years, while remaining one of the most distinctive sights along the uShaka beachfront.
