My story...

My marketing story started almost two decades ago when I returned from a gap year working on a kibbutz in Israel and doing odd-jobs in Europe, to return to South Africa with not a clue about my future. My father enrolled me in a short course to airline ticketing, hoping it would lead to a travel agency role and encourage me to do something related to this travel bug that had bitten.

I started working for Comair Limited shortly after, just as they had signed a 10 year licensing agreement to operate domestically under the British Airways brand - a very exciting time to join the business! While they were exchanging their prop jets for Boeings, I was learning about the industry and how to handle customers as a Call Centre agent and moved into my first marketing role two years later. I fell in love with the art of strategy and the psychology of branding.

That shift was the beginning of an incredible 20 year career in marketing, where I have been responsible for driving the marketing strategies for some of South Africa’s top corporate brands - British Airways, Cell C, Red Bull Mobile, adidas and RCS Group. I have been able to hone my skills across various marketing disciplines such as acquisition marketing, retention strategies, brand development, advertising & promotion, eventing & brand activations, project management, sponsorships, corporate social investment, digital marketing and public relations. I also recently ran a digital marketing agency which specialised in digital strategy and lead generation through online advertising.

Over the past couple of years I have seen small-to-medium businesses struggle with the increasingly complicated marketing landscape, particularly with digital marketing channels and concepts such as Content, Social Media (no - they aren’t the same thing), Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), and paid media channels like Google, LinkedIn and Facebook. Coupled with my in-depth understanding around brand development, identifying the way to correctly frame your messge, defining and intimately understanding your target market, I decided to start MD Marketing Solutions (MD = Michelle Dobson / MD = Marketing Director...get it?) to help SMEs make sense of the world of marketing, so that they are able to put the right message in front of the right customer at the right time, and position themselves to sell their product or service to a prospect which is more likely to convert into a paying customer.

As a Marketing Consultant and Strategist, I play a Marketing Director role to businesses that can’t justify the cost of a full-time senior marketing resource, or don’t need a full-time Marketing Director. Other than helping business owners develop their marketing strategies and identify where they sit relative to their competitors, I’m also able to play a Marketing Manager role to co-ordinate efforts by a number of suppliers on behalf of my clients, to ensure all marketing activity is being executed with excellence and according to the predetermined business strategy.

And you know what? ... it feels good knowing small changes and a structured approach can make a meaningful difference to the livelihood of passionate small business owners.

On a personal note, having completed the New York Marathon in 2014, I then tackled the world of triathlons and completed my second Iron Man 70.3 event in January 2017. Nowadays you’ll more than likely find me on the trails – either en-foot or on a mountain bike. I love trying new things and seeing new places, and have a long-term love affair with music. In my spare time I like to relax, read, watch live music and meet up with friends. I love all things guitar but don’t play. I have a dry sense of humour with a penchant for silliness, and tend to laugh often, despite my serious side.
