POURING OUT S1E12: Lungile Masondo Pours Out | Racism, Radio & Finding Her Voice
This Sunday on Pouring Out, Lungile Masondo takes us through a remarkable journey of identity, race, education and finding her voice.
Raised as a Zulu child in Eldorado Park, Lungile reflects on growing up in a predominantly Coloured community before entering an all-white boarding school in 1995, just one year into South Africa’s new democracy.
Out of more than 1,000 learners, only four were Black.
She speaks candidly about the racism she experienced, from other learners refusing to use a bathroom or shower after she had used it because it was considered “contaminated”, to a teacher allegedly telling white learners to open the windows because the Black children were “smelling”.
Lungile also recalls mobilising Black students into a hunger strike, and questions whether schools and teachers were ever truly prepared for integration in post-apartheid South Africa.
Her story also includes an unforgettable encounter with Nelson Mandela, where she name-dropped an uncle who had once been imprisoned alongside him.
From those early battles to studying at Boston Media House and building a career in radio, Lungile ultimately found the thing that would define her professionally: her voice.
A conversation about race, belonging, courage, broadcasting and what integration really looked like on the ground after apartheid.
