Where time and space meet, and alignment falls into place and all of a sudden you have unicorn hair which you absolutely love!

My hairdresser was having a bad week, I messaged asking for an appointment and needed colour, she cleared her schedule and we just had fun doing my hair. I am absolutely in love with the results, and we both agreed that whenever she needs to be creative, I will avail myself

The Hidden Origins and True Nature of the Pixie

Pixies are perhaps the most iconic representation of fairy-kind in British folklore. While modern portrayals often show them as playful tricksters of the forest, their history is deeply intertwined with older Northern European traditions. To truly understand these elusive beings, we must explore both their origins across Norse and Celtic cultures as well as their intrinsic relationship with nature.

Origins in Lore

Scholars believe Pixies emerged as a hybrid of two influential mythological races - the dark elves or Dökkálfar of Norse tradition and the Aes Sídhe spirit-people of ancient Celtic belief. The Dökkálfar were associated with shadows and wild untamed places, representing nature's more mysterious and chaotic forces. Similarly, the Aes Sídhe inhabited the Realm of the Mounds and Hills, guarding liminal borderlands between our world and the Other.

As the two cultural lineages mixed on British soil, these conceptual origins likely blended into the Pixie prototypes we know today - diminutive but magical guardians of woodland, moor, and glen. While their physical stature decreased, Pixies retained ancestral ties to protecting natural domains and influencing small-scale natural phenomena through glamours and herblore.

Nature and Attributes

Standing at roughly 6 inches tall on average, Pixies live solitary lives or in small family tribes deeply tied to a specific terrain. Using magical abilities, they remain unseen by humans unless permitting interaction. Strong associations with trees, plants, insects and other non-human life demonstrate Pixies' role as guardians of biodiversity.

Temperament varies depending on respect shown to their protected ecosystems. Generally playful yet unpredictable, they aim to shield native flora and fauna from human disruption. Mild tricks teach environmental wisdom, while disrespect invites ill fortune to compel behavior change. Advanced Pixie kinds exhibit complex knowledge of botanicals, weather or contacting allied fey.

Relationship with Place

The Pixie spirit intrinsically connects to landscapes beyond human cultivation or development. Their magic deeply understands each rock, stream and living being within pixie-held territories, weaving an intrinsic natural wisdom over generations. This guardian role originates from ancient Norse and Celtic beliefs recognizing nature's sentience beyond human definition.

Concluding Thoughts

By examining Pixie folklore across cultural boundaries and within local British contexts, we gain new insight into these elusive spirits. Beyond modern cinematic tropes, their hidden origins within revered Northern traditions point to a profound relationship with place, heritage and ecological protectionism. The untamed heart of the countryside remains in part watched over and guided by these invisible stewards of flora and fauna.

Knock on Wood" - A Druid Tradition

The superstitious saying and action of "knocking on wood" has its roots in the ancient traditions of the Druids. For the Druids, who respected and revered nature above all else, the wood of an oak tree held deep spiritual significance.

The mighty oak was seen by the Druids as a conduit to the gods and a symbol of strength, endurance and protection. Its extensive root system reached far underground, connecting the various levels of the earth. For this reason, the oak was considered a guardian and protector, with powers to ward off misfortune.

When the Druids noticed someone speaking proudly or boastfully of something good in their life, they would gently remind the speaker to "knock on wood" in order to give thanks to the oak and forest gods, and to humble oneself. Speaking or thinking too positively of one's fortune was believed to potentially attract the evil eye or unseen bad luck.

By knocking respectfully on the wooden staff of a Druid, or directly on the sturdy bark of an old oak, one was both thanking and requesting the tree's protective powers. It was a humble acknowledgment of Nature's greater forces, and an appeal to the gods through Their sacred trees to keep blessings flowing and ill fortune at bay.

To this day, the instinctive act of knocking on wood after speaking proudly carries the old Druid magic and acknowledges our interconnectedness with the natural world. It's a small grateful gesture that pays respect to the enduring spirit of the oak and the aged wisdom of the Druids.

I am slowly but surely sitting back down at my work bench, I can't say the pain has subsided, but am pushing past that. I got 4 of these lockets awhile back and tbh I am a sucker for jewellery that doubles up as a memory safe keep. They are only available hung on leather and are R110 a necklace not including postage

Public service announcement: So I rant a lot and am generally full of hot air on social media.....believe it or not I am quite pleasant in person 🤣😂.

Anyway on a serious note, I do suffer from scoliosis and for the most part I perform fairly well given my pain levels, however the last two days have actually left me in tears, am struggling to use me right arm without at least two painkillers down. Sadly this means any art commissions I am currently working on will be delayed, I am so sorry and I do hate using excuses but think in this case it's fairly valid. Hopefully by Monday my body has decided it might be nice to me again but for now I am taking some downtime 🙏. Thank you for your love, support and patience
