Disadvantages of Pig Inbreeding

Category Specific Disadvantages Impact on Producer

Production & Growth Reduced litter size, slower growth rates, poorer feed conversion Lower
* - Profitability: More cost for less output
* - Health & Vitality Weaker piglets, higher pre-weaning mortality, increased disease susceptibility Higher Veterinary Costs & Losses: More dead animals, more medication needed
* - Genetic Defects Increased rates of hernias, leg defects, cryptorchidism, organ failures
* - Increased Culling: More animals unfit for sale or breeding
* - Reproduction Lower conception rates, poor semen quality in boars Inefficiency: More time and resources spent on breeding management
* - Long-Term Viability Loss of genetic diversity, reduced adaptability Risk to Herd Future: Herd is vulnerable to being wiped out by a single disease or change

# **Conclusion**

For almost all pig farmers, inbreeding is a destructive practice that should be actively managed and avoided. The negative effects of inbreeding depression are rapid and severe, impacting the very core of profitability: the number of healthy, fast-growing pigs weaned per sow.

Hereโ€™s a step-by-step guide for performing artificial insemination (AI) in pigs.

What Youโ€™ll Need
Semen from a healthy boar (from a certified AI center)
AI catheters (spirette or foam-tipped)
Non-s***micidal lubricant
Clean paper towels
Gloves
A calm, clean environment

Step-by-Step Procedure

1. Detect Estrus (Heat)
Use the back pressure test: Apply firm pressure to the sowโ€™s back. If she stands still or arches her back, she is in standing heat and ready for insemination.
Signs of heat include: swollen/red v***a, increased vocalization, restlessness, and mounting behavior.

2. Prepare the Semen
Warm the semen to body temperature (around 37ยฐC) by placing it in lukewarm water for 10โ€“15 minutes.
Gently mix the semen to ensure even distribution of s***m cells.

3. Clean the V***a
Use a damp paper towel to clean the sowโ€™s v***a to prevent contamination.

4. Insert the Catheter
Lubricate the catheter tip.
Gently insert it into the sowโ€™s va**na at a slight upward angle.
Rotate the catheter clockwise until resistance is felt (this means it has reached the cervix).

5. Attach the Semen Bottle
Connect the semen container to the catheter.
Allow the semen to flow in slowly by gravityโ€”do not squeeze the bottle.
This usually takes 5โ€“10 minutes.

6. Remove the Catheter
Once the semen is fully deposited, gently remove the catheter.
Keep the sow calm and still for 15โ€“20 minutes to help s***m travel up the reproductive tract.

7. Repeat the Insemination
Perform AI 2 times at 12โ€“24 hour intervals while the sow remains in standing heat.

Tips for Success
Always use fresh or properly stored semen.
Maintain cleanliness to avoid infections.
Record the insemination time and monitor for signs of pregnancy.

๐Ÿ– Ultimate Guide to Proper Pig Housing for Maximum Productivity

Presented by Nzambani Agrifarms โ€“ Smart Housing, Healthy Pigs, Profitable Farms

Creating a healthy and efficient environment for your pigs starts with proper housing. Whether you're running a smallholder piggery or a growing commercial enterprise, the way you house your animals can directly impact their health, growth rate, and overall productivity.

๐Ÿ”ธ 1. Plan Housing Around Sow Numbers
The size of your unit is best determined by the number of sows you keep. Since a sow can farrow twice annually, your housing should accommodate pregnant sows, farrowing sows, nursing piglets, growers, and finishersโ€”all at the same time. Forecast how many pigs will be in each category to ensure your facility never gets overcrowded.

๐Ÿ”ธ 2. Control Temperature & Ventilation
Pigs are sensitive to extreme temperatures. Piglets, in particular, are prone to cold stress, while adult pigs suffer in excess heat. In cooler areas, close wind-facing walls while ensuring some airflow. In hot climates, build with open sidewalls or slatted bricks to boost ventilation. Shade and water runoff areas are essential to prevent overheating.

๐Ÿ”ธ 3. Space & Comfort Are Crucial
Cramming pigs into small pens causes stress, reduces weight gain, and increases disease risk. Design pens with sufficient space for animals to rest, feed, and move freely. Separate sleeping areas from dunging zones. Add simple enrichment like straw or hanging plastic bottles to reduce boredom and aggression.

๐Ÿ”ธ 4. Hygiene and Maintenance
Ensure your pig houses have proper drainage to keep pens dry and easy to clean. Build using locally available, durable materials like concrete floors, timber frames, and iron sheet roofing. Where possible, raise floors slightly to prevent water stagnation.

โœ”๏ธ Good housing improves pig health
โœ”๏ธ Reduces disease outbreaks
โœ”๏ธ Enhances weight gain and feed efficiency
โœ”๏ธ Supports animal welfare and farmer profitability

5 Hard Lessons Learned Pig ๐Ÿ– Farming in Nigeria

1- Bought Local Pigs as Pure Breeds
We bought already stunted piglets as weaners. After 4 months, they were still same size. They were sold as pure line and their prices.

Tips: if you are new to pig farming, use an experienced farmer to help you source your pure line. Buy from reputable farms that have reputation to maintain.

2- Bought all parent stock from same parents
To save time and money, we bought both male and female pigs from same mother. At maturity, when we crossed them, we inbreeding issues such as high mortality rate, weaker immune system, birth defects, slow growth, stillbirths, etc.

Tips: Never buy female and male parent stocks from same farm.

3- Used Sawdust
Sawdust might be practical in colder Uganda but not practical in hot Nigeria. Sawdust retain heat. Your pigs will hate them and sleep at any concrete surface available in their room. Replacing the sawdust is not sustainable.

Tips: Avoid them. Use concrete floor

4- Not So Strong Building Structure
Build your pigs cheaply, and will spend more money in the long run. Pigs are scavengers and will damage everything that can be damaged. They will damage the flooring, the doors, their food place, etc.

Tips: Build solid doors with iron, good practical locks and hinges. Use solid concrete floors with enough cement. Pour their food place with cement and not bricks coated with cement.

5- Housing Direction
We initially built with this in mind. During rainy season, we had issues with rain coming inside the farm house. The wind direction for cooling.

Tips: build and align your pig house to avoid rain from entering and for effective cooling. Pigs can overheating and โ€ฆ.
