Respect the Small Money: Building Wealth Through Discipline and Consistency

I won’t lie… I’m getting excited about these weekly doses.

I find myself planning, preparing, and growing through them and I hope you are too.

This week is personal.

I’m reminded of one of the last conversations I had with my dad before he passed on. I remember begging him to teach me about money.

Before I share the lesson, let me give you a bit of background.

My dad was a self-made millionaire. He started in the taxi industry and later built a strong portfolio in the property space. What amazes me now, as I go through his compliance documents, is that he didn’t have formal teaching or guidance. He built everything based on what he understood.
Now, we are the ones who must continue the journey adding structure, proper systems, and compliance. It’s not easy, but it’s possible. And we are hopeful.

Here’s the lesson he gave me:

👉 “Respect R1 and R2. They go a long way.”

At the time, I didn’t understand it.
I thought he was holding back, not wanting to share the “real secrets” of making money.

But now I see it clearly.

I started being intentional about the small amounts the R1s, the R2s, the little savings. And something surprising happened

Those small amounts started growing.

Today, I look at that discipline and realize if I stay consistent, this money can grow into something that pays salaries.

💡 That’s when it clicked:

Wealth is not built in big moments.
It’s built through discipline and consistency in the small things.

🔑 This Week’s Focus:

Respect small money
Build a habit of saving and tracking
Create systems that protect your finances
Work towards compliance in your business
Because it’s not just about building for today

👉 It’s about building something that can be sustained and passed on.

📌 Final Thought:

Don’t ignore the small beginnings.
The R1 you overlook today
could be the foundation of the business that changes your family’s future tomorrow.

Let’s build with discipline. Let’s build with consistency. Let’s build for generations.

Khabonina Mnguni is carving a powerful path as a businesswoman determined to uplift her community while preserving a family legacy.

Mnguni, a 38-year-old identical twin born and raised in Thembisa, spent nearly 13 years working in finance and marketing before transitioning into business ownership. Armed with a BCom in Finance, a BCom Honours in Financial Management from the University of Johannesburg, a postgraduate diploma in Marketing Management from the IMM Graduate School, and a Chartered Global Management Accountant qualification through the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, she brought both academic excellence and professional experience into her entrepreneurial journey.

She is the co-founder of Zibangwenya Supplies trading as ZS Uniforms, a uniform manufacturing and retail business based in her grandparents’ shopping complex in Welamlambo Section, Tembisa. “I am a third-generation entrepreneur, operating from the same building my grandparents built in the 1980s. Continuing their legacy is very personal for me,” she said.

Established in June 2020 alongside her twin sister, the business has grown steadily and now supplies school uniforms to more than 15 schools in and around Thembisa. The company offers a wide range of products, including socks, tunics, golf shirts, blazers, tracksuits and jerseys, catering primarily to parents of local learners. Prices range from as little as R60 for socks to about R700 for blazers, making their products accessible to the community they serve.

Mnguni explained that the business was born out of a clear gap in the township market. “ZS Uniforms was inspired by a challenge I saw in Thembisa and in many townships like ours. There are very few large-scale, Black female-owned school uniform stores operating within the township. As a result, many parents must travel into town, which increases cost and inconvenience. Our goal is to solve that problem by bringing affordable, quality uniforms closer to our community,” she said.

Production is managed in collaboration with her cousin, Makhosazana Nkoko, a qualified fashion designer with over 16 years of experience in garment design and manufacturing. Mnguni also took it upon herself to learn embroidery, a skill she now uses to train her team to improve turnaround times and reduce costs. “Embroidery is something I had to learn because we identified it as critical to our value chain,” she added.

Beyond school uniforms, the business also supplies corporate clothing and personal protective equipment to companies across sectors such as security, healthcare and cleaning services. They also offer custom designs for matric groups, Grade 7 learners and corporate clients.

WEEK 3: Marketing vs Branding — Why Some People Say YES (and Others Don’t) 💭✨

I learned something this week that changed how I see business…

👉 Marketing is asking someone out
👉 Branding is the reason they say YES

But let me be honest…

As a marketer, I’ve been asking…and sometimes the answer has been no.

Not because my offer was bad…but because my brand was not clear yet.

Last week wasn’t easy.

I had back-to-back meetings.I had to stay strong in front of people. And the only moment I had to release everything…was in the shower.

(We will talk about that another day🤍)

But in the middle of all that…I learned my greatest lesson:

✨ Marketing and Branding are not the same.

📢 Marketing is what gets attention. It’s your posts, your ads, your videos. It’s how you say: “Hey, look at me!”

💎 Branding is what people feel about you. It’s your reputation.Your consistency.Your story.Your identity.

It’s what makes someone say:“I trust you.”

So here’s the truth:

You can be loud in marketing…but if your branding is weak, people will walk away.

But when your branding is strong?

🔥 People don’t just say yes once…They come back. They refer others. They believe in you.

I’m still learning.I’m still growing. And I’m choosing to learn this the right way.

Let’s learn together

💬 Tell me in the comments:When was the last time you said YES to a business… and why?

🌿 Weekly Marketing Dose for SMMEs – Week 3
Numbers: Clarity & Control

I used to stay in a building called Numbers, owned by Zelri Property Company. When I learned that their properties were named after books of the Bible, I became curious and started studying the Book of Numbers.

What stood out for me was this:

Moses became frustrated because he didn’t have a system to manage the people.

As the story unfolds, we see structure being introduced order, grouping, accountability. And through that, leadership became more effective.
Let’s bring that into business.

This week, we’re talking about Numbers because numbers bring clarity, and clarity gives you control.

Many of us are working hard every day… but we don’t actually know what we are making.

👉 We see money coming in
👉 We are busy all day
👉 But at the end of the month, there is no real growth

Why?

Because we are not managing our numbers.
Just like in farming, a farmer measures the harvest.

In business, your numbers are your harvest report.
So what does this look like in a small business or spaza shop?

✔️ Track your daily sales – know exactly how much comes in
✔️ Track your expenses – know where your money is going
✔️ Understand your profit – what is actually left after everything
✔️ Price your products correctly – especially in food/kitchen businesses
✔️ Separate business money from personal money
Here’s a hard truth I’m learning myself:

A busy business is not always a profitable business.

If you don’t control your numbers, your numbers will control you.

This week, let’s keep it simple and intentional:
📌 For the next 7 days:
Write down every sale.
Write down every expense.

At the end of the week, ask yourself:
👉 “Am I really making a profit?”

This is where growth begins not in guessing, but in knowing.

Let’s build businesses with clarity, discipline, and control.

WEEK 2: Marketing is Telling Your Story 📖✨

Let me say it again…

Marketing is telling your story.

Not just what you sell… but why you exist.
Kusile Bhekilanga Group is more than just a business — it’s a full circle.

We collaborate with farmers. 🌱
We process. 🔪
We sell. 🛒
We cook. 🍲

From the ground… to the plate.

Our store in Olifantsfontein brings together a spaza shop and a kitchen, all built around one purpose:

🥬 Making fresh vegetables easy, quick, and accessible for everyday households and businesses.

Our mission?
To help people invest in their health by making it simple to cook fresh, chopped vegetables daily.

❤️ Your story matters.
It speaks before you even open your mouth.
It calls your target market.

It makes the right people say:
"This is for me."

🎨 Add colour.
Add emotion.
Add value.

Because people don’t just buy products…
They connect with meaning.

And when your story is clear?
Your tribe finds you.

🔁 Be unique.
📌 Be consistent.

Marketing is a long-term game.

Long after the business has closed for the day…

People will still remember how your story made them feel.

📢 A strong story makes advertising easy.

Why?

Because you’re no longer convincing people
you’re reminding them.

Your audience already knows you.

They already trust you.

They already connect with your brand.

🔥 Storytelling is powerful.

It moves from one person to another…
From one generation to the next.

That’s not just marketing.
That’s legacy.

🌱You need quality seedlings to have a quality harvest.

Let's recap from week 1:

Just like in farming, before any seedling is planted, the soil must be prepared. The condition of the soil determines the quality of the harvest.

The same principle applies to business: the internal state of your business determines its outcomes.

Internal work includes:
●Clarifying your values and principles
●Strengthening your leadership and decision-making
●Being intentional about the people you bring into your business

🌱 Weekly Marketing Dose for SMMEs - Week 2

Systems Over Struggle: Build Structure Before You Scale

Last week, we spoke about doing the internal work preparing the soil before planting.

This week, we go a step further.

In farming, you don’t just prepare the soil and plant. You create systems to water, protect, and maintain your crop. Without that structure, even the best seed won’t survive.

The same applies to business.

Many small businesses don’t struggle because of lack of customers they struggle because there is no system.

A system is not an expensive app.
A system is a consistent way of doing things in your business.

💡 It’s how you handle your money
💡 It’s how you track your stock
💡 It’s how your team operates daily

I’ve learned this the hard way…
Without systems, even good people can make bad decisions. Not because they are bad but because there is no structure.

So what does this look like in a small business or spaza shop?

✔️ Recording every sale, no matter how small
✔️ Counting cash daily and matching it with sales
✔️ Tracking stock coming in and going out
✔️ Giving each person clear roles and responsibilities
✔️ Following a simple daily routine from opening to closing

It may sound basic but this is where stability begins.

Many of us think systems are expensive.

But the truth is what is expensive is operating without them.

Before you invest in apps or software, invest in structure, discipline, and accountability.

📌 Don’t automate confusion. Fix your system first.

This week:
Choose ONE area in your business cash, stock, or staff and create a simple system for it.

Let’s build businesses that don’t just grow but last.
