CAROLUSBERG MURDER ACCUSED SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS’ IMPRISONMENT

SPRINGBOK: The South African Police Service in the Namakwa District has welcomed the conviction and sentencing of 27-year-old Sipheto Sobekwa in the Springbok Regional Court, citing it as a reaffirmation of its commitment to combating violent crime and delivering justice for victims. The court sentenced Sobekwa to 15 years’ imprisonment on 9 July 2026 after finding him guilty of murder. Three years of the sentence were suspended for five years on condition that he is not convicted of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, attempted murder, or murder during the period of suspension. The case relates to an incident on 27 November 2025 in Carolusberg, during which a 36-year-old man was fatally stabbed. The victim was admitted to hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries on 4 December 2025. Sobekwa was arrested on the day of the incident and remained in custody after being denied bail. In addition to the prison term, the court declared him unfit to possess a firearm in terms of Section 103 of the Fi****ms Control Act, 2000 (Act 60 of 2000). The successful prosecution was attributed to the investigative work of Detective Sergeant Clarence Olyn and the court presentation by prosecutor Mr Basil K**k. Police said their diligence and professionalism ensured accountability and brought closure to the victim’s family and the Carolusberg community. Namakwa District Commissioner Brigadier Schalk Andrews commended all role players involved. “This sentence sends a clear message that violent crime will not be tolerated. We commend the investigating officer and the prosecution team for their commitment and professionalism in ensuring that justice was served. SAPS remains steadfast in its mission to protect our communities and to ensure that perpetrators of violent crime are held accountable,” Brigadier Andrews said.
