It’s a fact that the quiet plains, which form the KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields Route, have not yet allowed all their ghosts to rest. If it is history you’re

after, the northern part of our beautiful province is your destination. The Battlefields Route Association has more than 67 historical sites around the 13 towns and villages on the route. Forts, museums and gravestones are dotted all over the length and breadth of the region marking sites where clashes between Boer, Brit and Zulu forever changed history. Most towns along the route have tourism offices with brochures packed with pictures and information. It is highly recommended that you employ the services of a tour guide at least once on your journey. They breathe life into the seemingly empty land. The region has even more to offer than emotion-provoking Battlefields. The area includes superb game viewing, and magnificent scenery. Privately owned game farms offer hunting, excellent accommodation, horse trails, mountain bike trails and walking trails. A rich variety of arts and crafts can be purchased in most of the towns and villages. Across the battlefields hundreds of bird species have been spotted.

The latest edition of the digital magazine for the KZN Battlefields Route is now out.
As you will see in Bronwyn's editorial comment we have changed the issue to being quarterly - so only 4 editions per year rather than the 6 we started off with.
This is a very special issue focusing on women in warfare. We ran out of space for all the articles we had so will consider doing a second edition on this theme some time in the future.
Enjoy.

in 1852, HMS Birkenhead struck an uncharted rock off South Africa’s Danger Point. As the ship went down, a new naval tradition was born... "Women and children first!"

With the lifeboats launched, the soldiers stood fast, knowing a desperate rush could capsize them. Lieutenant-Colonel Seton ordered his men to hold their ground, even as the ship split apart beneath them. Most went down with the wreck, their discipline immortalised in history and later, in Kipling’s words:

"To stand and be still to the Birken’ead Drill is a damn tough bullet to chew."

Of the 634 onboard, only 193 survived.
