The Mission Begins
In mid 1977 Solomon Mahlangu and his MK unit left Angola on a high-risk mission to join and support the June 16 commemorations in South Africa ✊🏾🔥
From Angola they travelled through Mozambique into Swaziland where they were met by Collin Ramusi who transported them to a safe house in Mbabane
There they were briefed by General Siphiwe Nyanda and given suitcases with false bottoms packed with propaganda pamphlets AK-47 rifles and hand gr***des
These boxes were called Dead Letter Boxes DLBs 💼🔫
MK units were usually split into cells of three for security
Mahlangu was in a cell with Lucky Mahlangu and Mondy Motloung
⭐ Crossing Into South Africa
On 11 June 1977 the trio crossed into Piet Retief
They hid weapons across various safe homes leaving some items for other passing cadres and for communities preparing for June 16 protests 🕊️🔥
Two days later they made their way to Diagonal Street taxi rank in Johannesburg intending to catch a taxi to Soweto
Police presence was heavy as the June 16 anniversary approached 🚨

Still running Solomon ducked into John Orrs warehouse to hide
Motloung desperate and confused fired inside the warehouse killing two employees
Within minutes the police and bystanders captured and assaulted both cadres

A 10-year-old stoic Japanese boy standing at attention having brought his deceased baby brother to a cremation pyre in Nagasaki, 1945.

Years later, Joe O'Donnell, the American photojournalist who took this photo, spoke to a Japanese interviewer about this photograph: "I saw a boy about ten years old walking by. He was carrying a baby on his back. In those days in Japan, we often saw children playing with their little brothers or sisters on their backs, but this boy was clearly different. I could see that he had come to this place for a serious reason. He was wearing no shoes. His face was hard. The little head was tipped back as if the baby were fast asleep.

The boy stood there for five or ten minutes. The men in white masks walked over to him and quietly began to take off the rope that was holding the baby. That is when I saw that the baby was already dead. The men held the body by the hands and feet and placed it on the fire.

The boy stood there straight without moving, watching the flames. He was biting his lower lip so hard that it shone with blood. The flame burned low like the sun going down.

The boy turned around and walked silently away".
