Nicolas Sarkozy, the former President of France, attended a court hearing on Tuesday to appeal his conviction for attempting to obtain campaign funds from Libya.
Last year, Sarkozy was found guilty of criminal conspiracy in connection with allegations that his associates sought financial assistance from the regime of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi for his 2007 election campaign.
He was initially imprisoned in Paris but was later released under judicial supervision.
The judges concluded that while there was no proof of a direct deal between Sarkozy and Gaddafi or that Libyan funds were received by his campaign, Sarkozy had indeed allowed his aides to pursue financing between 2005 and 2007.

Tourist numbers at Victoria Falls during the Easter holiday have seen a significant increase of over 1,600 from last year, with a total of 10,690 visitors recorded this year, up from 9,018 in 2025. According to the National Heritage Conservation Commission, domestic tourism has experienced a notable surge, with Zambian adult visitors increasing from 6,054 last year to 8,138 this year during the four-day holiday. However, the commission noted a 21.4% decline in Zambian child visitors over the same period. Non-Zambian visitor numbers remained relatively stable, with a slight decline from 1,292 in 2025 to 1,237 in 2026. While Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of 2026 outperformed their 2025 counterparts, Easter Monday 2026 saw a slight decrease in traffic, with 1,288 visitors compared to 1,469 in 2025. Saturday remained the busiest day of the Easter weekend in both years, with a total of 4,151 visitors recorded on April 4, 2026, the highest single-day figure across the two periods. The figures indicate a growing trend in domestic travel, with local tourists playing an increasingly important role in sustaining visitor numbers at Zambia's major tourism site.

The United Party for National Development (UPND) has commenced its internal electoral process, as announced by Likando Mufalali, the party's chairman for elections and campaigns. In a press briefing, Mr. Mufalali revealed that the party president and National Management Committee (NMC) members will be elected during the forthcoming general assembly scheduled for next Wednesday. He stated that the party has provided members with guidelines for the electoral process and anticipates a smooth election. The intra-party elections will commence at the branch level, with members electing ward representatives, followed by constituency committees, and then district and provincial representatives, ultimately leading to the general assembly, where the party president will be elected. The nomination fees for various positions are K100,000 for the party presidency, K2,000 for NMC positions, K500 for provincial leadership, and K10 for branch and lower party structures. Government Vows to Address Livestock Theft in Lufwanyama. The government has vowed to take immediate action against those responsible for the rising cases of livestock theft in Lufwanyama District. Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo issued the warning during a meeting with Lufwanyama District Commissioner Justin Mwalikwa on the sidelines of a church fundraising program for Nkana UCZ. Mr. Matambo stated that his office will work closely with the police command in Copperbelt Province to develop strategies aimed at curbing the thefts. President Hakainde Hichilema has reconfirmed Zambia's dedication to providing free education, resulting in the re-enrollment of over 2.5 million children, without compromising the quality of education. In his address to the 17th Association of Non-Aligned Teachers' Unions in Southern Africa symposium in Lusaka, President Hichilema highlighted the importance of balancing access and quality. 'Quality education is non-negotiable. We must prioritize both quantity and quality,' he stressed to hundreds of teachers from six Southern Africa Development Community countries. President Hichilema pledged that his administration will continue to invest in education, ensuring it becomes a fundamental right for every child, and plans to escalate this agenda to regional and continental platforms such as the African Union. He cited the free education policy, school feeding programs, and re-entry policy as key factors driving increased enrollment, but emphasized the need for additional investment to maintain standards. 'Education is vital, as it enhances society,' he said, commending teachers for their significant impact on civilization. He noted that complementary services, including school infrastructure, furniture, water supply, sanitation, and teacher accommodation, are crucial to support learning. Zambia U15 Teams Depart for Zimbabwe to Participate in CAF Schools Championship By Chansa K***a The Zambia Under-15 boys' and girls' national teams have departed for Zimbabwe to participate in the 2026 CAF African Schools Championship, scheduled to take place from April 6 to 10, 2026. As regional champions in both categories, Zambia will be making their inaugural appearance at the continental schools tournament. Boys' team head coach Everisto Mkandawire stated that the squad is well-prepared for the challenge, despite being drawn in a tough Group B alongside Tanzania, Senegal, and Benin. He noted that the team aims to reach at least the semi-finals, with the ultimate goal of emerging as continental champions.
