In December 2000, my late friend from the Copperbelt University days, Mr. Isaiah Kefania Mbewe, who was then Director of IKM Clearing and Forwarding Ltd, took me for a weekend vacation in Siavonga. We went to a place called Sandy Beaches on the banks of Lake Kariba and I was dumped there with a bunch of business books. During our stay, there was a steady supply of Mosi and I was really well fed, enjoying fresh breams. Occassionary, as boredom set in, I would stray to watch the birds and boats in the vast lake and play a game of pool – and never ever win any - with the youths in the entertainment area.

But whenever it was time to retire, I would find myself facing the business books in my room. Even though I was a voracious bookworm, I did not just read everything; I read only materials that were unapologetically African-centred and FACTual, not fictional material and of course no motivational or some other random books. So, for me it had to be reading works of Cheikh Anta Dip, Molèfe Kete Asante, Kwame Nkrumah, Marcus Garvey, Ivan van Sertima, Yosef ben-Jochannan, Chinweizu or Maulana Karenga.

But, as we say in the East: “Mkango ukafa njala umadya udzu.” (Translation: when there is no game for the hungry lion, it goes grazing) So the bookworm in me, not finding my type of books, went the hungry lion’s way – grazing! I started reading the available books. And boy, oh boy! I actually enjoyed; they were well written, easy to read, American books with inspiring stories on legendary American businesses such as FedEx, DHL, KFC and many others covering broad topics including business formation, marketing and branding. After this retreat, we returned to Lusaka and, effortlessly, I created the business name AFROSPACE and it was registered with PACRA by Mr. Mbewe himself on 19th December, 2000. Additionally, I was offered a corner in his office where I set up my drawing board. AFROSPACE was born. This month, we celebrate, for seven days starting from 25th December to 31st December, the Silver Jubilee of AFROSPACE.

Many Zambian children have heard the utterings of Chiluba's terrifying descent into the land of the dead, or learnt why the nyau masks hold such power in Chewa tradition. These stories are intrinsic to our culture, carrying insight and wonder that affect how we view our world.
