I was only 15 years old when life in our family was hard. Dad would come to us once a week, and we never knew where he used to sleep. Mom tried her best to act strong, but we could see the tears she wiped away when she thought no one was watching.

On the days Dad showed up, it was like a stranger had entered the house. He barely spoke, only asking if we had eaten, then disappearing into his own thoughts. I used to wonder if he even remembered that he had a family waiting for him.

Sometimes, I would watch Mom sitting quietly, staring at the empty chair where Dad used to sit during better days. That chair became a reminder of the life we once had but had slowly slipped away from us.

At night, when I lay on the thin mattress I shared with my younger brother, I would whisper to him, “Maybe things will change when we grow up.” He never replied—he just turned his back and held onto sleep as if dreams were safer than reality.

Still, no matter how heavy those days were, mornings always came. And with them, the sound of roosters, the smell of charcoal smoke, and Mom’s voice calling us to get ready for school. Life didn’t pause for our pain—it pushed us forward whether we were ready or not.
