Stop competing. Start owning.

Over the past three years, I’ve been studying how brands like Woolworths and MultiChoice (DStv) built dominance in their markets not by offering what everyone else was offering, but by creating something others couldn’t easily replicate.

Here’s what I discovered: these brands don’t win because of size or popularity… they win because of exclusivity.

Woolworths doesn’t manufacture most of its clothing. Instead, it owns Country Road a premium fashion brand that’s sold exclusively in its stores. That move gave Woolworths full control over quality, pricing, and brand perception.

MultiChoice did the same thing with SuperSport. They didn’t just buy broadcasting rights they bought the entire channel, making sure that if you want to watch the biggest games in Africa, you have to go through DStv. That’s not competition; that’s control of the ecosystem.

Even locally, brands like Grandaddy’s have followed this formula. They became the go-to place for Jameson, making their bar synonymous with the brand itself. When people think of Jameson, they think of Grandaddy’s and that’s the power of exclusivity.

So as business owners, we need to stop asking, “What are others selling?” and start asking, “What can I offer that no one else has access to?”

Because in business, you don’t rise by being louder, you rise by being irreplaceable.

When I left my full-time job in 2023, I thought running a business as a creative would be easy. I was wrong.

I learned the hard way that talent alone doesn’t build a brand, business knowledge does. Creativity opens doors, but business keeps them open.

Let’s be honest most businesses don’t fail because of poor products. They fail because of poor strategy.

For a year+ now, I’ve been talking about one important question every business should ask:
👉🏽 Who has my customers?

When Showmax partnered with That ZED Podcast, many saw it as a random influencer deal. But it was actually one of the smartest strategic moves in marketing a brand aligning with a platform that already speaks to its ideal audience.

That’s what effective marketing looks like in 2025, not just throwing money at ads or billboards, but identifying where your audience already is and meeting them there.
