Land taken. Promises made. Compensation that never comes.

This is the story on repeat across every community where fossil fuel giants set up shop. No consultation. No consent. Just extraction and excuses.

At our People's Tribunal, we put TotalEnergies on trial. Communities took the stand. The verdict was clear: accountability isn't optional.

What if the most important question isn’t “Is this true?” but “Who benefits if I believe it?” 🤔

That was one of Nomsa's biggest takeaways from our Fake News Fighters Bootcamp.

The UKWELI Toolkit keeps reminding us that some climate narratives aren’t just misleading; they’re designed to delay action.

Think critically. Question deeper.

Download the UKWELI Africa Climate Disinformation Toolkit and sharpen your climate fact-checking skills.

When we understand how these narratives are built and spread, we are better equipped to challenge them before they take root.

It was amazing getting these reflections from minds like Cathleen.

Sometimes misinformation doesn’t arrive as a headline. Sometimes it arrives as a WhatsApp message from someone you trust.

"I learned to always ask, 'Who benefits?' when encountering suspicious climate content. The toolkit also taught me to recognize delay discourses like "Africa's emissions are tiny; why act?” - arguments designed to stall climate action while communities like mine continue suffering," reflected Tinotenda.

From WhatsApp groups to public conversations, we need the tools to question, verify, and challenge misleading narratives.

Not every viral conversation you come across online is organic.

During the Fake News Fighters Bootcamp, Nestar explored one of the most eye-opening lessons from the UKWELI Toolkit: The Digital Play, how online amplification can be used to make false narratives appear bigger and more widely accepted than they really are.

From coordinated trolling to attacks on climate scientists and activists, these tactics can create the illusion that “everyone thinks this way” when in reality, a small but organised network may be driving the conversation.

The UKWELI Toolkit helps us look beyond what is trending and ask the bigger questions:

🔎 Who is amplifying this message?
📢 Is the conversation organic or coordinated?

"Narratives like “climate change is natural” or “Africa should develop first” are not random; they are strategic."

Elaine keeps reminding us to always ask the bigger questions and look beyond climate disinformation being just a bad take online.

When Vivian stepped into our Fake News Fighters Bootcamp, she not only made the experience more memorable, but her insights on UKWELI showed how committed she was to fighting disinformation online.

After exploring UKWELI, Vivian discovered that climate misinformation is not always easy to spot.

"One new thing I learned is how to recognize the subtle ways climate misinformation spreads through digital platforms. The toolkit highlights that false or misleading information often mixes some truths with exaggerations or misleading context, making it seem credible at first glance," she said.

These are the skills we need to build stronger, more informed communities that can challenge climate disinformation wherever it appears, from social media feeds to everyday conversations.

Climate disinformation doesn’t always look like a lie.

Sometimes it’s a real fact, taken out of context. A genuine statistic. A headline designed to trigger emotion. A story framed to make us question the reality of the climate crisis.

This is what Methembe took from UKWELI;
"The toolkit emphasizes the need to go beyond surface-level fact-checking by examining the source, intent, and framing of information. It also highlights how emotional language and sensational headlines are often used to manipulate public perception."

One of the biggest takeaways from our Fake News Fighters Bootcamp? Climate disinformation isn’t always random. It’s often strategic, coordinated, and designed to delay climate action.

After interacting with our climate disinformation toolkit, Thandokuhle had this to say:
'Identifying disinformation then goes beyond fact-checking individual claims; it requires examining who benefits from the message, patterns of repetition, and the networks spreading it. Understanding intention, funding sources, and amplification strategies is important when separating disinformation from misinformation. This perspective shifts the focus from isolated falsehoods to the broader systems and interests driving them.'
