LONDON — The United Kingdom has formally authorized the United States to use British military bases to conduct strikes against Iranian missile sites that are targeting shipping vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement released following a meeting of UK ministers, the government confirmed that existing agreements for the US to utilize UK facilities for "the collective self-defence of the region" extend to operations aimed at degrading Iranian missile capabilities.
"The agreement for the US to use UK bases in the collective self-defence of the region includes US defensive operations to degrade the missile sites and capabilities being used to attack ships in the Strait of Hormuz," the official statement read.
The confirmation expands upon previous remarks by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who had stated the US was permitted to use the bases for "defence strikes" concerning Iran.
The authorisation has heightened diplomatic friction between the UK and Iran. Prior to the UK ministers' meeting, the Iranian Foreign Ministry issued a statement declaring that permitting the US to launch attacks from British military bases would constitute the UK's "participation in aggression."
In response to Tehran's posture, UK Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper stated she had spoken directly with her Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi. Cooper said she explicitly warned Araghchi "against targeting UK bases, territory or interests directly."
The exact locations of the British military bases slated for potential use by US forces were not detailed in the provided government statement. - Zimbo LIVE London
