The Parliamentary Thematic Committee on Peace and Security has commended the remarkable progress being made at the Centragrid Solar Plant in Nyabira, Mashonaland West Province, following a fact-finding visit aimed at assessing the contribution of renewable energy projects to national development.
Committee members were informed that the solar project began in 2014, with its first phase completed in 2018, generating 2 megawatts (MW) of electricity that was successfully connected to the national grid. In 2023, the company embarked on an ambitious expansion programme, which was completed in 2024, boosting generation capacity to 25MW.
The plant now plays a crucial role in supplying electricity to Norton, Chinhoyi, Karoi and Bindura, strengthening energy security and supporting economic growth in these areas.
Beyond power generation, Centragrid has created employment opportunities for local communities and contributed to socio-economic development through community empowerment initiatives.
The Committee praised the project's achievements, highlighting the vital role being played by independent power producers in complementing Government efforts to address growing energy demands while advancing Zimbabwe's transition towards sustainable and renewable energy sources.
