Instagram prioritized short videos in 2022. However, a shift occurred at the beginning of 2023 when Adam Mosseri announced a change in direction, prioritizing photos over videos. This change prompted all brands to pivot away from video content. Hootsuite conducted a comparative analysis of the performance of Reels and carousels to assess this shift.
According to data from October 2022, carousels exhibited the highest average ER on Instagram at 0.62%. In contrast, Reels, despite active promotion by the platform, achieved an ER of 0.61%. Moreover, Hootsuite's data indicated that carousel posts outperformed regular posts by 3.1 times in terms of engagement by the end of the previous year.
The Core of the Study
Hootsuite carried out a three-week experiment, spanning from mid-February to early March 2023. Each week, they posted two sets of content for a vintage home decor business account with 1.6K followers. During this period, they published a total of 12 posts, consisting of six carousels and six Reels, all containing similar content. Measurement of results took place 48 hours after the posts were published.
Study Results
Carousels garnered 220 likes, while Reels received 126 likes. Additionally, carousels achieved a broader reach, reaching 2,316 compared to 2,052 for Reels. Interestingly, after incorporating advertising, carousel posts continued to achieve a greater reach compared to Reels. However, Reels advertisements led to higher profile activity.
While the comparison in terms of reach and engagement favors carousels over Reels, it's essential to consider other factors. Audience demographics and content preferences play a crucial role. For the account under examination, the majority of followers were women, primarily millennials.
