WhatsApp voice and video calls appear to be unblocked in the UAE

When it comes to the list of smartphone apps that people use the most, we’d guess that instant messaging client WhatsApp ranks pretty high, which is why it’s so significant that WhatsApp voice calling appears to now be working in the UAE (both for domestic and international calls).

One of the standout features of the service was until now blocked in the UAE: and that is the ability to make voice and video calls for free. A function that has been blocked locally by the Telecoms Regulation Authority (TRA) due to it falling into the Voice Over IP (VoIP) category.

That is until now. Reports came in thick and fast online this morning that the service now appears to be unblocked within the UAE.

And it is. We have tested the WhatsApp voice and video calling functions across both WiFi and mobile data and can confirm that they are working within the UAE as of time of publishing. Although, we’ve often had trouble connecting, even domestically – perhaps due to high demand as everyone finds out it’s now available again.

We attempted a number of international calls but were only able to get through on some. So as it stands, the service appears to be unblocked locally but working sporadically internationally.

It is unclear at this stage whether this an accidental occurrence or a loosening of legality from the TRA, and there’s not telling how long it will last.

No official statement has yet been released, and it should be noted that until such time, VoIP services remain restricted in the UAE outside of officially licensed providers.

Dubai Islamic Bank donated Dh185m in 10 years to charity

Dubai: Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB) has contributed Dh185 million over 10 years to Dar Al Ber Society, which has distributed the amount to thousands of needy people.
The beneficiaries included Emiratis and expats of different nationalities in all emirates, said Abdullah Al Falasi, executive director of Dar Al Ber.
“The DIB charity over the last 10 years covered a wide range of vulnerable people, including destitute patients and students of poor families, let alone pending rents and bills,” he added.
Low-income expats have also benefited from the DIB aid, he said. “Dar Al Ber paid the rents and bills of a big number of low-income people, provided some with air tickets home, and supported the families of inmates and the victims of job frauds.”
The debts of some Emirati nationals and expats have been partially settled after verification, Al Falasi said. “Such achievements would not have been possible without the DIB commitment,” he added.

Abdul Razzaq Al Abdullah, head of community services at DIB, said that the bank spared no effort to cooperate with charities across the country to help eligible people everywhere.
“The [DIB] is all set to adopt social responsibility and turn it into a reality, brining happiness to vulnerable people, in line with the directives of the prudent leadership,” Al Abdullah said.
