The house carried the scent of rosemary and slow-roasted beef.

The kitchen was a storm of steam and rattling plates.

This was no ordinary meal.

It was Sunday Dinner.

The heavy cabinet doors would swing open wide.

Out came the "good china" with its gold-rimmed edges.

We handled those plates as though they were made of glass.

There were no "quick bites" or eating in front of the TV.

When the roast landed on the table, the world stood still.

Everyone had their designated chair.

From the youngest child to the oldest grandfather.

We all sat down at the very same moment.

Steam curled upward in a gorgeous cloud above the center of the table.

We talked about the week.

We laughed until our stomachs hurt.

The phones weren't there to pull our attention away.

The only thing that counted was the people filling those chairs.

It was a weekly anchor in a hectic world.

It was the one moment we were all truly present.
