With the advent of COVID-19, many companies have begun a process of virtualization they didn't expect at the start of the year (we never expected this year to be a pseudo-Armageddon, though). These issues go beyond what "How to's" or Tips and tricks posts can do, so we'd like to share what we do at Moka to make remote work great for us.
- Follow your values: there's something that differences successful remote companies from any other in the world -besides being distributed- and that is sticking to their values on a daily basis. At Moka we do this by always having in mind our own: being respectful, striving to be a team player, getting to know our colleagues, being constructive with focus on the solution, expecting good intentions, and enjoying every day! Having a stable work environment starts with culture.
- Be kind to yourself: this crisis caught us all -except Bill Gates, apparently- by surprise. Suddenly, you went from working at an office every day, to work at your house. You may not have a dedicated workspace, or struggle keeping your attention during work hours. In times like these, it's critical that we, as individuals, give ourselves a break. Things will get better with time while your company and colleagues get used to working remotely full time, so, be kind to yourself, breathe, and keep trying.
- Keep in touch with your colleagues: just because you're far away from your coworkers, doesn't mean you have to lose touch with them. Taking some time to talk with your teammates, either during breaks or before a meeting is essential if you don't want to feel like you're just working with pixels on a screen. At Moka, we like to keep a Google Meet room open where we can just drop by and chit chat. We also do team building activities, to make ourselves more used to work remotely, and always remind our foodie whiteboard, to know that when this is all over, will make his Asado
