Honestly? I need it.

Life has been full β€” beautifully, chaotically, exhaustingly full. And I've reached that point where showing up here feels like one more thing on a list that's already too long.

So I'm not going to.

I'm going to hibernate a little. Reflect. Let winter do its thing β€” and anyone who's spent a Tasmanian winter knows it's basically nature's way of telling you to slow down and go inside. 🌧️

I learned something a few years ago that completely changed how I think about marketing.

It didn't come from a course. It didn't come from a book or a podcast or a conference keynote.

It came from watching what happened when I put a group of business owners in a room together.

I'd been running workshops and training sessions for a while by that point. And I kept noticing the same thing. People would arrive a little guarded β€” heads down, notebooks ready, there to learn from the person at the front of the room.

And then something would shift.

Someone would ask a question and someone else would say β€” oh, I've had exactly that problem, here's what I did. Or someone would share something they were struggling with and three people around them would visibly exhale because they'd been carrying the same thing alone.

The magic wasn't coming from me.

It was coming from them. From the room. From what happens when people who are navigating the same thing stop navigating it separately.

And I realised β€” this is the missing piece for so many business owners. Not more information. Not a better strategy. But a room of people who get it. Who can look at what you're building and say β€” yes, I see it, here's what I notice, here's what worked for me.

That's stayed with me ever since.

It's a big part of why I run the Marketing Momentum Membership the way I do. And it's a big part of why I love running live workshops.

Because something happens in a room β€” even a virtual one β€” that doesn't happen when you're working through things alone. Ideas land differently. Questions you didn't know you had start surfacing. Something I see constantly with the business owners I work with.

They have a marketing to-do list as long as their arm. Post on Instagram. Write the email sequence. Fix the website copy. Set up the lead magnet. Look into ads. Create a content calendar. Batch the reels.

It's all on the list. It's been on the list for months.

And every week they sit down to work on their marketing and face the same problem β€” where do I actually start?

So they do the easiest thing. Or the most urgent thing. Or the thing that's been nagging at them the longest. Not necessarily the thing that will actually move the needle.

Here's what I've learned from working with business owners for 20+ years.

The to-do list isn't the problem. The missing piece is knowing which three things on that list actually matter for your business right now β€” at your stage of growth, with your specific audience and offer.

Because when you know that?

The list stops being overwhelming. It becomes a menu you're choosing from deliberately rather than a pile of obligations crushing you slowly.

You stop doing everything badly and start doing a few things really well.

And your marketing starts to feel β€” for maybe the first time β€” like it's actually going somewhere.

A little while ago a request popped up in a local Facebook group. A family was needed to host a French exchange student.

I saw it and had two thoughts at exactly the same time.
That would be really cool.
That is also really scary.

We have little ones. I have never parented a teenager. I mean, I was a teenager once β€” but bringing one into your home, into your existing family dynamic, into your everyday life? That's a big thing.

But then I thought about my own experience.

When I was a college student back in the Netherlands, I had the opportunity to go to the UK and stay with a host family. They had little children too, funnily enough. And it was one of the most enriching experiences of my life. It opened my world. It made me braver. I'm still grateful for that family.

And I thought β€” what a gift to be able to offer that to someone else.
So we put our hand up. We crossed our fingers. And we said yes.

And so far? She is absolutely lovely. The kids adore her. She's settling into school. Our home feels fuller in the best possible way.

We're only a little while in, so I won't speak too soon β€” but right now we are so glad we did it.

Sometimes the things that scare you a little are exactly the things worth doing.

It's Sunday night and she's sitting at her kitchen table after the kids have gone to bed.
The house is quiet. She's got her laptop open and a cup of tea that's gone cold because she keeps forgetting to drink it.

She's been meaning to work on her marketing all week. Properly work on it. Not just schedule a few posts or send a quick email β€” but actually sit down and think about what she's building and whether any of it is working.

So she opens a blank document and stares at it.
And the familiar feeling arrives.

Not quite panic. Not quite paralysis. Something in between. A kind of low hum of anxiety that comes from knowing you need to do something but not being sure what that something is. From having seventeen tabs open in your browser and feeling more confused than when you started.

She closes the laptop. She'll do it tomorrow.

I've heard this story so many times. From smart, capable women with genuinely great businesses who can't figure out why their marketing feels so hard. A few weeks ago I was on the highest of highs after the conference. Buzzing. Energised. Ready for all of it.

And then… the dust settled.

Winter arrived in Tassie β€” properly β€” and with it came grey skies, days of rain, and that particular kind of tired that settles into your bones when you've been running on adrenaline for too long.

And then, because life loves perfect timing, we added a 15 year old exchange student from France to our household. πŸ˜…

So right now our little family is: one primary schooler, one in daycare, one French teenager, two ponies, a horse, the dogs β€” and me, trying to hold it all together while the rain hammers the roof.

My business has taken a back seat for a bit. And I'm making peace with that.

Because this is just life, isn't it?

It's not always the highlight reel. Sometimes it's the post-conference slump, the winter blues, the beautiful chaotic full house that leaves you simultaneously grateful and completely overwhelmed.

The highs are real. So are the lows. So is everything in between.

Let me tell you what $49 has bought my clients.

Not in a hype way. Just honestly.

There was the membership owner who'd been running ads for eight months without a clear lead generation strategy underneath them. We spent two hours together mapping out her foundations β€” the stuff she'd skipped in her rush to get to the "real" marketing. Within six weeks she'd cut her ad spend in half and doubled her leads. Not because she found a magic formula. Because she finally stopped building on sand.

There was the service provider who came to me convinced her pricing was the problem. Clients weren't converting and she assumed she was too expensive. We looked at her conversion path together and found the real issue within about twenty minutes β€” she had no nurture sequence. People were opting in, getting one email, and then going cold. The offer was never the problem. The follow-up was.

There was the course creator who'd been posting every single day for a year. Every. Single. Day. And her audience was growing, slowly, but sales were inconsistent and she was burnt out. We looked at what she was actually posting β€” and realised almost none of it was conversion content. She was educating and entertaining but never inviting people to buy. One shift. Immediate difference.

These aren't complicated fixes. They're clear ones. And clarity is almost always what's missing.

I used to think the hardest part of marketing was knowing what to do.

I was wrong.

The hardest part is knowing what to do next β€” when you're standing in the middle of your business with a hundred different options in front of you and no clear sense of which one actually matters right now.

I worked with someone last year who had been in business for four years. Four years of showing up, trying things, pivoting, trying again. She wasn't failing β€” she was making sales. But every month felt like starting from scratch. Like the tap would run for a bit and then stop. And she'd have to go find the water again.

When we mapped out her whole marketing picture together, something became clear pretty quickly.

She didn't have a direction problem. She didn't have a motivation problem. She had a map problem.

She was navigating without one. Making decisions based on what she'd last read, or what someone in a Facebook group had suggested, or what felt most urgent on a Tuesday afternoon. And without a map β€” without a clear picture of where she was and what the logical next move was β€” she kept ending up back at the start.

Here's the thing about a map though. It doesn't do the walking for you. But it makes every single step easier because you know where the step is taking you.

That's what the right marketing system does. Not more work. Better direction.
