When you spend months on the tools helping promote a brand new production, you always hope opening night will live up to the vision everyone has been talking about behind the scenes.
Last night, State Opera South Australia’s Cinderella (La Cenerentola) didn’t just deliver — it swept me away.
I genuinely think it may be one of my favourite opera experiences of all time, sitting right up there with Sweeney Todd and Carmen.
Neil Armfield created something slick, hilarious, deeply theatrical and completely joyful. Neil’s 70s-inspired vision felt like a love letter and homage to theatre itself — celebrating spectacle, backstage chaos and the magic of live performance. Even the chorus of men, dressed as theatre stage hands with mullets, were iconic. And .stewart_choreographer fingerprints were all over the performance, I loved the choreography and his epic style on stage!
And then there was the cast.
My lord.
Anna Dowsley was full of warmth and humanity as Cinderella, while Jihoon Son, making his State Opera debut, delivered a voice that was simply out of this world. Magnificent, effortless and soaring.
Teddy Tahu Rhodes, Helena Dix, Nicholas Lester, Pelham Andrews and Indyana Schneider were all brilliant, while Stuart Stratford conducting the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra brought such energy, precision and heart to the entire production.
No wonder it received a full theatre standing ovation.
What an extraordinary way for State Opera South Australia to open its Golden Jubilee year. Bravo Dane Lam!
Only three performances left. Please see it. I promise you won’t regret it.
Loved. Loved. Loved it.

SHABANA AZEEZ URGES YOUNG ARTISTS TO APPLY FOR $400K IN CARCLEW GRANTS
If you’re a young creative — or know one — this is your moment.
Carclew’s expanded $400,000 grants program is now open — supporting the next generation of South Australian creatives, with a call to action from local girl turned international star Shabana Azeez (HBO’s The Pitt).
Backed early by Carclew, Azeez is part of a powerful alumni network — including Emma Hough Hobbs and Lucinda Penn — proving what can happen when emerging artists are given the support, space and confidence to create. Emma Hough Hobbs’ Le***an Space Princess took out the prestigious Teddy Award at the Berlin International Film Festival and is airing on Netflix, and Lucinda’s beautiful murals grace the Adelaide Markets and Airport through to across the globe — putting South Australian talent that once started with a Carclew grant firmly on the global stage.
Delivered through the South Australian Government’s A Place to Create cultural policy, with support from Arts Minister Kyam Maher.
This is the largest investment in Carclew’s history, with grants of up to $20,000, new quick-response funding and more opportunities to apply throughout the year — designed to help young creatives take that first step and build momentum.
Applications close 14 May 2026. Apply now: www.carclew.com.au (http://www.carclew.com.au/)
Tag a young creative who should see this.
