Responsive web design is the process of adapting your desktop websites to work on mobile screens. It requires you and your design team to scale down and simplify your desktop version to work on a smaller screen. Unlike a mobile-first strategy, which puts the desktop version first.

𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗹 𝗯𝗶𝘁 𝘃𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁?

Well the 2 concepts are very similar. Responsive content tends to be more reactive, whereas Mobile-first content is more pro-active.

In simple terms . . . Responsive content is built on desktops and modified digitally to perform well on mobile devices. Which is definitely a step in the right direction if you already have an awesome digital presence....

But what it doesn't do, is emphasis the mobile users experience with your brand.

𝗠𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗲-𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱, 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟲𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗲𝗯𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀.

So with this in mind, Mobile-first thinking creates a better experience for mobile users from their very first contact with your brand... NOT just as some last-minute addition or half-hearted attempt at search engine optimisation.

In saying that though, Mobile-first does NOT replace responsive design. If anything, they're meant to work hand-in-hand.

And since your audience rely's so much on their mobile devices nowadays, rather than designing a beautiful desktop website and forcing it to fit on smaller devices, plan out both versions at the same time.
