The story of our solar system doesn't end with the planets.

In 2019, NASA's New Horizons spacecraft flew past Arrokoth, the most distant object ever explored up close. This pristine Kuiper Belt object has remained largely unchanged for billions of years, offering scientists a rare look at the building blocks that formed our solar system.

Now, NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is set to expand that search. Roman is expected to give us a new view of the farthest reaches of our solar system, reveal more than 100,000 exoplanets, and help scientists understand how planetary systems form and evolve across the galaxy.

From the ancient objects in our own cosmic backyard to planets orbiting distant stars, every mission helps uncover the story of our origins.

A common bacteria responsible for gum disease can trigger a dangerous buildup of calcium in the heart, new research shows.

New preliminary research presented at the American Heart Association’s Basic Cardiovascular Sciences Scientific Sessions 2026 reveals a startling connection between gum disease and calcific aortic valve stenosis (CAVS), a serious condition that narrows the heart's aortic valve and restricts blood flow.

Scientists discovered that the bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis, notorious for causing gum inflammation, was significantly more prevalent in diseased human heart valves. By examining human tissue samples and conducting mouse models, the researchers demonstrated that this common mouth microbe triggers a targeted inflammatory response, which actively accelerates calcium accumulation in the heart's vital pathways.

While there are currently no approved medications to halt or reverse the progression of CAVS—often leaving valve replacement surgery as the only viable treatment—this discovery offers a promising new avenue for prevention. In animal models, blocking the specific inflammatory pathway activated by the bacterium or administering preventive antibiotics significantly reduced calcification. Although clinical trials in humans are still ongoing, experts emphasize that maintaining excellent oral hygiene and treating periodontal disease early could be an overlooked but crucial shield against developing severe cardiovascular complications.

🚨The largest known great white shark in the Atlantic was just spotted near North Carolina — and it’s over 1,700 pounds.

A satellite tag attached to 'Contender,' a nearly 14-foot-long mature male great white shark, transmitted a brief signal near North Carolina’s Outer Banks this week, confirming he is migrating up the U.S. East Coast.

First tagged off the Florida-Georgia coast in January 2025 by the marine research organization OCEARCH, Contender has since logged more than 7,000 miles.

Because satellite tags only transmit when a shark's dorsal fin breaks the surface, Contender's brief 'ping' offers crucial, rare data on the movements of the largest male great white ever tagged in the western North Atlantic.

These long-distance migrations are seasonal patterns that have occurred for thousands of years, with sharks heading north toward cooler, prey-rich waters around Cape Cod and Atlantic Canada for the summer.

While shark sightings near popular beaches often spark public anxiety, marine scientists emphasize that attacks remain exceptionally rare. Instead, tracking Contender's multi-year journey helps researchers understand how these apex predators navigate the ocean, providing vital insights necessary to protect marine ecosystems and maintain ocean balance.
