Jack of all trades, master of none BUT STILL BETTER THAN ONE. This quote by William Shakespeare ,in its entirety ,was originally intended as a compliment but is often used partially and twisted into an insult.

The phrase was a hat tip to the individuals whose curiosity led them out of their cave and led them down several rabbit warrens of knowledge across different disciplines.

The basic frameworks still apply to all seemingly unrelated disciplines- multiple rounds of failing and learning followed by eventual success.

A brand requires something similar. Specialisation is always required to build something but the ability to comprehend spheres other than one's own is an unparalleled advantage. It allows a brand to know their strengths and weaknesses and ascertain their relative position in the world.

The final fit and polish of any successful brand is often the first thing to be imitated. Such an approach ignores the fundamental hard truth of the imitated brand’s journey from what it was to what it is now.

Originality, then, is a misunderstood concept – it is not merely doing different things but also about the multitude of choices.

Embracing the choices that the brand had to make many times and, in many forms, give it authenticity and rids it of fluff, which is transient and difficult to justify.

Be it a new player entering a space or a seasoned player reinventing themselves. There are stories to be told and a brand that can tell the most interesting story is often the one that resonates with the public.

Branding activities are considered by many to be a fixed set of tasks. All too often these lists of tasks emerge due to businesses mindlessly aping their peers in the field. This outsourcing of brand values ignores the massive shortcomings of an external approach in the quest for nil-to-marginal advantages.

Any brand must be a slave to its own internal values. Subsequent branding activities that emerge for promoting those internal values will be unique and highly relevant. They have a greater chance to occupy a place of prominence in the consumer’s mind

The deference to a set of values also acts as a guiding star for the members of the organisation as it gives them something greater than themselves to look up to, eliminates un-necessary confusion and ensures that the consumer interactions are exceptional every time they interact with the brand.

Short term solutions often result in long term problems.

A brand should remain consistent across all spheres of existence. The core habits and modes of operations exhibited in physical stores must be accurately reflected online. Brand values are what defines consumer sentiment.

Often, business put the cart before the horse by communicating an organisational culture that simply does not exist in real life just to gain ground online. The message conveyed does not line up to the actions being performed.

The only emotional connection made with the consumer is confusion and irritation, which is the last notion that the brand would like to imbibe in the consumer base.

Complacency kills. We’ve all heard it before. In marketing, it is the core driving force.

When there are no strategic changes in approaches to customer engagement, the brand effectively becomes stale.

A business must constantly define and refine where it is going.

Without a destination in mind, any attempt at building an identity becomes a lumbering stab in the dark.

Best possible customer service, the best solutions provider, the last word in technical innovations – all examples of worthwhile directions. Once the guiding north star of a business is located, the brand identity that develops is always a mirror reflection of the business priorities, no matter how many direction changes that happen.

Brand value is more than just the product itself. Failed “good” products are more numerous than the ones that succeed. Businesses spend massive amounts of time and effort building customer relationships, which the accountants recognise as goodwill.

A common occurrence in business - an idea catches on like greased lightning in a relatively short span, the organisation becomes complacent, and they start looking inward rather than outward.

No matter how successful, a nine-days-wonder cannot be considered an ongoing business.

Similarly, mindless deployment of current-day fads and tricks will not net you a brand identity.

Marketing initiatives undertaken must have a sound basis in fact and relevance and must be accompanied by a solid plan for continuous upkeep of online presence to acquire and retain consumer sentiment.
