A LABEL CAN PASS INSPECTION ON DAY ONE AND STILL FAIL THE PRODUCT MONTHS LATER.

Two labels may leave the factory looking identical.

One will remain inside a controlled environment. The other will face sunlight, heat, rain, cleaning chemicals and daily abrasion.

Their real differences may not become visible until long after production approval. That is why quality and product-engineering teams need to assess more than initial appearance and adhesion.

LNI’s testing approach includes real-time outdoor exposure and accelerated xenon-arc weathering. Testing can also examine characteristics such as abrasion, tensile performance, adhesive strength and flammability.

The process can include products expected to fail. A successful sample confirms what worked. A failed sample can reveal when deterioration began, how it occurred and which part of the specification may need to change.

Good testing does more than confirm the preferred answer.

A LABEL SPECIFICATION THAT STARTS WITH SIZE, COLOUR AND QUANTITY MAY BE MISSING THE MOST IMPORTANT INFORMATION.

What surface will it be applied to? Will that surface be smooth, textured, curved or powder-coated? Will the label face UV, heat, moisture, chemicals, cleaning or abrasion? Will an operator wearing gloves apply it on a production line?

For product engineers and procurement teams, these details are not secondary. They help determine the material, adhesive, print process, testing and application method.

SOMETIMES THE LABEL IS CORRECTLY SPECIFIED BUT THE APPLICATION PROCESS IS THE FAILURE POINT.

The material is suitable. The adhesive has been selected for the surface. The print and dimensions have been approved.

However, operators are still struggling to apply the label efficiently and consistently.

In one example shared by LNI, the operators were wearing gloves. This made the release liner harder to remove, increased the chance of touching the adhesive and made accurate positioning more difficult.

The solution was not necessarily another label material.

Options including back-slit liners, front tabs and positioning templates made the component easier to handle and apply.

For production and manufacturing engineers, the lesson is important:
A component should not be specified only for the surface where it will eventually sit. It should also be specified for the person, protective equipment and production process that will put it there.

Before final approval, test the complete application process under real production conditions.

A PREMIUM BADGE PLACED INCONSISTENTLY STOPS LOOKING PREMIUM.

The finish may be correct. The colour may match the brand. The adhesive may be suitable for the vehicle's surface.

However, if the position changes from one unit to the next, the finished product can still appear inconsistent.

One badge sits slightly higher. Another is closer to the panel edge. A third is applied at a different angle.

For assembly and quality teams, the application method is therefore part of the component specification.

SCREEN PRINTING IS EASY TO UNDERESTIMATE BECAUSE MUCH OF THE SKILL IS HIDDEN BEFORE THE FIRST PRODUCTION PRINT.

The finished image depends on a series of connected decisions:

- Mesh selection
- Stencil exposure
- Ink viscosity
- Squeegee selection, angle and pressure
- Print speed and positioning
- Curing conditions

Each can influence colour, definition, opacity, adhesion and durability.

Depending on the ink, substrate and application, screen printing can also apply a thicker ink deposit than many digital processes. This can support strong opacity and performance in demanding applications.
That matters when a small label, panel or nameplate must remain consistent across an ongoing production run.

Modern machinery supports the process, but the equipment list alone does not control the result.

Process knowledge and operator judgement do.

When assessing a manufacturing supplier, look beyond the machinery. Ask how the process is controlled from the first print to the last.

A SMALL LABEL CAN HOLD UP A HIGH-VALUE SHIPMENT.

Labels may represent only a small part of the finished product.

They often receive little attention until the last pack is opened.
Without the correct label, a product may be missing a compliance marking, operating instruction, serial number or required piece of branding.

Most manufacturing work may be complete, but the finished unit may still not be ready to ship.

For procurement, production-planning and supply-chain teams, the component’s replenishment process therefore matters as much as its physical specification.

A MACHINE CAN BE MECHANICALLY SOUND AND STILL BECOME DIFFICULT TO OPERATE IF ITS INTERFACE HAS FAILED.

The switches may work. The electronics may perform correctly. However, the printed instructions are scratched, the button labels are difficult to read or the display window has become damaged.

A graphic panel is not simply a decorative cover.

For equipment manufacturers and industrial designers, it can be a functional part of the user interface - identifying controls, communicating instructions, providing display windows and protecting critical information.

One durability option is to reverse-print the graphic onto the back of clear polycarbonate or polyester. The user views the information through the material while the printed image remains protected behind it.

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN A PRODUCT-BRANDING BRIEF

Need a badge, nameplate, label or graphic component?
A clearer initial brief can help your supplier recommend the right solution faster.

Include as much of the following information as possible

⚪ Application:
Where will the component be used?

⚪ Surface:
What material, coating or texture will it be applied to?

⚪ Environment:
Will it face UV, heat, moisture, abrasion, chemicals or cleaning products?

⚪ Dimensions:
What size and shape are required?

⚪ Quantity:
Is it a prototype, initial production run or ongoing program?
Artwork:
Is approved artwork available, or is artwork support required?

⚪ Finish:
Should the result appear metallic, dimensional, matte, gloss, textured or printed?

⚪ Timing:
When is the component needed for production?

A good supplier will still ask questions.
But a detailed brief creates a stronger starting point for technical advice, accurate quoting and a fit-for-purpose result.
