This spring, I designed a pink envelope to celebrate Pride Month with our Q***r Chinese community. As a q***r person my whole life, this project offered a chance to express who I truly am.
I remember making a video art called 'I.D.' during my first year at Emily Carr Uni. In that work, I aimed to illustrate how many Chinese individuals are hesitant to reveal their authentic selves, out of a desire to protect themselves and their loved ones. There is a famous Chinese idiom, 'The bullet hits the bird that pokes its head out,' perfectly embodies this sentiment. Reflecting on my past, it feels as though the incidents that unfolded in my life now form a cohesive narrative that makes sense to me.
Taking on this project and stepping in front of the camera to share our stories wasn't easy; doubts and apprehensions filled my mind. Some people nowadays may question the necessity of celebrating Pride, but they might not fully grasp that this is a special day dedicated to love, inclusion, and empowerment for our LGBTQ+ friends and family. It is my hope that the younger generation, like me, will find inspiration in this message and navigate their lives with clarity and confidence.
Just three days ago, I had the privilege of meeting Paul Wong at his studio, and the experience of learning more about his story has been truly inspiring. I am grateful for Kevin, the visionary behind mission red pocket, whose remarkable ability to connect all the dots within the Chinese Community in Vancouver made all of this possible.
If you are aspire to support our community, consider getting one at Holt Renfrew or online.
Our message promotes love, rejecting fear or hate. In Chinese culture, 'Double Happiness' holds significance, and the same goes for our LGBTQ+ culture too.
Happy Pride 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️👩👩👧👦❤️
