I’ve hosted some 500+ people and budding beer enthusiasts through my old home based / commercial brewery in my converted garage in Boolaroo, Lake Macquarie. Along with Vincent Costanzo of costanzo brewing consultants. My business philosophy has always been in the success of others. Success is about collaborative communication and having the gusto to see it through. Life is paved with long hauls and shortcuts alike it’s not always you find a guide to help you on your path. Let’s start talking today.

Excise on CPI indexing. Beer used to be a cheap and affordable product, no more.
Would you consider getting into home brewing? Still a dollar a litre and better yet no preservatives and all yours! The best part is you won’t have to pay excise, only the tax for your kits at the check out!

Campaign 2025We're fighting to keep locally owned beer available and affordable for the average Australian. the IBA are making roads into the tax affair that we struggle with endlessly, needlessly and every six months it goes up again.
There’s no sustainable aspect to this type of fiscal cash grab. Not one brewery aside from the multi nationals who’ll even be able to afforded the luxury of sending their beers down the line, lets alone the shelves and taps Australia wide in 5-7 years from now.
Beer is going to cost by the end of this year $12-$15 a schooner.
That’s a meal. The 3rd highest taxed alcohol rate in the world.
I’ve enjoyed being a producer but I couldn’t afford the packaging tax. So I closed up.
And so many that had come and gone in this great industry have also tasted the sour lambics of this stupid tax regime.
But what about the publicans - will they also lower the prices back to a normal level once this tax is lowered? If this tax is lowered?
I’ll be signing up to the IBA’s plea for lowering at best freezing the tax. Cause currently every 50L of beer is 35%TAX. FT.

How does one start down the road of becoming a brewery? It’s a loaded question.
How big/small, what’s your audience / market.
Do you want to sell to a local community, brewpub scenario.
Do you research your market or throw caution to the wind (said no one ever).
Do you buy the Main Street or dig into the industrial estate.
What about future funding after you’ve made all your best laid plans and purchased the brewery, built the building, paid for trades to connect you plus you council (ferryman 30%).
Then the staff - brewer (do you contract) or have you DIY?
Do you have access to cashflow??
Whichever way you set up the last question is the one you’ll want to get you going.

James McKay.

Morning all I’m curious to know what the thoughts are for many breweries around Australia when the proposed excise increase kicks in and the question is, is there still skin in the game? Will the IBA step in to make some aggressive proposals to the ATO at large to stop the ever increasing tax.
In Australia to date, we are the third highest taxed beer economy. , , ,
