PSA that not every metric is meant to do the same job on social media 🧐

That’s one of the most helpful reminders for marketers and social media managers right now, especially when so many people are still asking which metric matters most.

The answer is:

It depends what the content is trying to do.

👍 Likes can show audience connection
🤝 Shares can help expand reach
💬 Comments often signal depth
📩 Saves can reflect longer-term value
🫶 Follows can point to future interest

None of these metrics mean the exact same thing, and they shouldn’t all be judged the same way either.

The strongest social strategy comes from knowing what each metric is actually telling you, then measuring it against the goal of the post.

Basing success and quality off of follower count alone is SO 2016 🥱
 
That big number looks like influence. And to be fair, it kind of was, because if someone followed you, they were far more likely to actually see your content.  
 
But the social landscape doesn’t work like that anymore. 
 
Platforms now push content through algorithmic recommendations, not just follower networks, which means reach is no longer tied to audience size in the same way it once was.  
 
That changes a lot for brands and content creators.
 
Suddenly microinfluencers with the smaller audience but stronger content, clearer niche, and more believable presence have become just as valuable as big name influencers. 
 
What matters more now is:  
- content people actually engage with 
- creators people come back to 
- ideas that travel beyond one post 
- trust that carries into action.
