As if we needed another reason to love Aldi - here it is! Kudos to Aldi for consistently standing my its positive brand and business values. They're once again showing effective leadership on ethics and sustainability in the Australian grocery market.

Aldi Australia has committed to switching to 100% renewable energy within 18 months, partly by turning its rooftops into solar farms.

Social media has changed the way we talk about socio-political issues forever. This year alone, the Bushfires (remember them, like a million years ago), Covid and Black Lives Matter are just a few of the key issues we've been navigating and for some - furiously debating - online.

But as a business and a brand, when and how do you get involved in these conversations? What are some of the risks? How do you minimise the risk of getting it wrong and alienating your followers? This great article goes some way to helping us understand how to engage in a woke world.

Do you talk about these things on your personal and business pages? How has that gone for you?

In 2020, many businesses have had to scrap their marketing plans and act reactively. But culture-jacking is never a good idea.

Well 2020 is off to an interesting start! I'm delighted to announce that I've just joined a fabulous line up to become a mentor for the University of Bristol's Quantum Technology Enterprise Centre - a world-leading incubator helping scientists convert cutting edge academic findings to commercial application.

I wouldn't consider myself a particularly 'sciencey' person - and yet I find their work and its powerful applications completely fascinating. It's an honour to be able to help these talented folks solve a few of the problems of our times and get their work out to the world.

As much as I love 'the old way' of buying groceries and chatting to a human being behind the register, I believe major automation of supermarkets and many industries is inevitable as people's lives hit peak busyness, technology continues to advance and the focus on the bottom line remains paramount to C-Suite KPIs (unfortunate but that's capitalism).

I believe our governments should be more focused on and supportive of fostering innovation and emerging industries and entrepreneurs that create new jobs. I believe they should be developing strategies to upskill and transition affected workers into new roles. (And I know tons of people have retrained and unfortunately can't get jobs, hence the point about new and emerging industry).

It would appear that innovation at an industry level is not keeping up with the rate of innovation at the automation/ operational level. It's a major structural and systemic issue overall.

This is why we need change makers and disruptors to forge new pathways. If there is insufficient focus top-down, let's make it happen bottom-up ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ’œโœจ

The shift from checkout operators to self-service will be soon be followed by eliminating the checkout system, and attendants, entirely.
