Can’t decide if this logo reads as “Water” or “Waves” 🤷‍♂️ It’s intended to be “Water” but the more I look the more I see 🌊🙈 The logo was made from a practise sheet of lettering, vectorised in Illustrator then edited into a motion graphic in After Effects following a tutorial from the great .motions Hope you enjoy the ride.

The 3D tools in Adobe Illustrator are so powerful! I always found 3D software had a big barrier to entry both in software and hardware even though I really wanted to combine it with my handmade lettering. I recently found some great tutorials on Youtube to break down the process and now it’s simple to make stuff like this. Stay tuned for plenty more in future!

I was working as a landscaper a few years ago when the owner asked me if I could help his mates create a logo for their farm.

The family had created a proposal to startup Kirchberg Poultry Farm in rural Rathdowney. They wanted a logo to represent the business that was prestigious, sophisticated and formal.

I created a moodboard referencing poultry, farming equipment and european design to help decide on a colour scheme, fonts and initial direction for the brand. Then I created pencil sketches and rough vector outlines until we found a style that we agreed upon.

The final logo was used for the successful proposal (see video on last slide) and then on all signage and branding across the business. I recently discovered that the farm was sold to a $1 billion dollar investment group AAM on 27/10/2023.

Improving my skills in the Adobe suite by using Premiere to edit video and Audition to edit audio. This was made using a Parallel Pen filmed with an Ipad to show off the line variation that is possible with these amazing pens. I wonder if anyone will recognise the sample at the end. ☃️

With the popularity of Boy Swallows Universe by https://www.facebook.com/TrentDaltonAuthor there seems to be a lot of interest in the history of Boggo Road Jail. Last year I created these book cover concepts for a fictional story called “Breaking Boggo”. Using scanned ink lettering and photoshop collages I designed this imagery to reflect themes of crime, freedom and redemption.

Quickly make your own matching set of vector icons.
This is the way I like to do it in Illustrator. First go to edit > preferences > guides & grids to setup a 10 x 10 grid. Then making sure snap to grid is turned on I begin using basic shapes to build my icons. The secret to keeping everything cohesive is sticking to a set of rules. These rules are based on the project, for this example we need a set of one colour icons that are clear at a small size.

The rules for this set are:
Minimum line thickness is 1.
Minimum circle diameter is 2.
Minimum edge margin of 1 .
Keep it minimal but try to add some flavour.
No big blocked out areas without contrast.
Diagonals cut at 45 degrees (mostly).

It takes alot of playing around to get the best results but I think this method makes things work smoother. See slide 2 for the example structure.

Timelapse video of my hand lettered alphabet for 36 Days of Type 2023. Everything is drawn using Procreate software for Ipad. Each year 36DOT has designers, illustrators and visual artists create their own interpretation of the letters and numbers of the Latin alphabet. Participants post a letter each day with specific hashtags. The goal is to share, promote and connect with emerging and established designers. I learned alot this year and am ready for the next.

Only one of these images was made entirely using AI, can you guess which slide?

I've been taking free images and editing in new content with generative ai in Photoshop. It's incredible how it can be used to turn a concept/thought/brainstorm into a new realistic scene. It helps to have a basic understanding of selections, editing and colour to take it to the next level also. A very useful tool in certain situations.

How I use my iPad to make script style lettering. This can be such a great tool to get initial sketches down. Being able to play around and edit onscreen means you can explore multiple variations fast. These initial sketches are then brought into illustrator and highly refined to create more uniformity, balance and contrast depending on the style needed.
