Raw sugar futures came under pressure last week as momentum from the extended rally faded and the market underwent a technical correction. Large long positions held by managed money funds became increasingly overbought, creating scope for a pullback.

Sugar traded to fresh highs last week before retreating ahead of the weekend, reflecting a market caught between tightening supply concerns and growing speculative length. Ongoing concerns about Brazilian production, lower estimates for India and Thailand, strong energy markets and reduced exports from several key origins continue to support prices. However, volatility remains elevated as funds hold sizeable long positions.

Raw sugar extended its rally last week, with the October 2026 ICE 11 contract finishing around 18 USc/lb, up roughly 50 points on the week. The market continues to draw support from global supply concerns, particularly weather risks associated with El Niño, potentially lower-than-expected Brazilian sugar production, and tightening crop prospects across several major producing regions.

QSL will again seek constitutional reform at its October AGM.

QSL CEO Mark Hampson said it’s time for businesses that compete with QSL and choose not to market their own sugar through the organisation to stop blocking decisions supported by the growers and millers who do.

ICE 11 raw sugar futures ended the week broadly unchanged from the previous Friday’s close, despite significant volatility throughout the week. On Friday alone, the prompt October 2026 contract traded within a 1.22 USc/lb range. Prices initially surged to fresh highs on technical buying after breaking through previous resistance levels. However, the move quickly ran out of momentum, attracting substantial commercial selling and profit-taking that pushed prices back from their highs by the close.
