Admittedly, this has to be one of my favourite brands I’ve worked on.

When Jayden and Murray approached me to help redefine their brand, they were already running a successful business.

They were busy, but stretched for time and attracting enquiries that weren’t always aligned with the kind of clients they actually wanted to work with.

This was the ideal time to stop, step back, and get clear on the foundations of their brand.

Who they are at their core.
What makes them different.
How they needed to sound.

And how their brand needed to show up to attract the right clients.

If my last 20 years in branding has taught me anything,
it’s that clarifying your brand is more important now than it ever was.

Tools come, tools go.
And using tools to your business’s advantage is always a good idea…

If it works.

There is a very obvious shift happening right now.
Businesses are no longer just getting lost in generic templates or rushed DIY graphics.

Many are getting lost in generic AI visuals.

The polished, generic structure
The icons
The visual details that feel slightly off

and nothing feels deeply connected to the brand

And while AI can be incredibly useful, it still needs direction.
- If your prompts are generic, your output will be generic.
- If your brand is unclear, your visuals will be unclear.
- If you have not defined how your business should sound, feel and show up, AI is not going to magically solve that for you.

Faster content - is not better content

A brand is not just a logo slapped on graphics
It’s how people perceive your business

A logo can't save what the rest of the "brand" is breaking...

Years ago I used to say yes to logo-only projects.
They were quick and simple enough.

But what I saw was actually doing more harm than good.
A beautiful new logo:
- placed on a templated website didn't have the same style.
- sitting beside messaging that didn’t quite articulate the business.
- being used across marketing materials with no consistency, and no real direction.

Even though the businesses are capable, experienced and trusted - they were showing up in a way that made them look less established, and professional than they actually were.

And for growing family-led businesses the goal is never to simply “look better.”

It's to build a confident brand that helps you to show up consistently across your website, marketing and client-facing materials to:
- Strengthen credibility.
- Sharpen perception.
- Present the business at the level it is truly operating.

The problem with treating a logo like the solution.

But a logo can't...
- fix unclear messaging.
- create consistency across your brand touchpoints.
- reposition your business in the market.
- help your audience understand your value if the foundations underneath it are still unclear.

Not because the logo doesn’t matter - it absolutely does.

It’s so rewarding to see our clients recognised for the work they do.

This feature on Nicola and SECA reminded me again that when working with Family-led business, it’s essential to get to know the real people behind the business, to help them grow their brands.

When Nicola and her team engaged us in 2023, they already had a logo, functioning website, strong industry reputation and decades of operational experience.

However, like with many growing family businesses, SECA reached a turning point.

Because although the business was going from strength to strength, internally, the brand needed a more formal structure from which to grow.

Because often so much of what makes the business strong lives in the people, the leadership, the culture and the deep operational knowledge that has been built over many years.

What they needed wasn’t a rebrand.

They needed a clearly defined brand system they could share with their entire organisation.

It was about helping clarify, identify and capture their brand DNA, and creating a shared framework that could support everything from stationery and corporate uniforms to advertising templates and EDM messaging.

The work was never about changing who SECA was.

No logo redesign.
No surface-level refresh.

Beautiful design should be celebrated, and recognition for thoughtful work is something to be proud of.

But the reality is these winning logos are often designed in isolation for the purpose of aesthetics.

Fictitious not functional.

When I design a logo, my starting point is not awards or industry applause.

It is your business.

The people behind it.
The clients you serve.
The work you want to be known for.
The details that make your business different.

Some of the strongest creative decisions are not always obvious, because the concepts come from somewhere deeper

Always strategically rooted in your story, values, process, or something meaningful to your business.

It is not just about creating something beautiful.

It is about creating a meaningful brand tool that attracts the right customers, and helps your business be seen, recognised and remembered for the right reasons

Family business does not mean small-scale.

Some of the strongest businesses across Australia are built around family, legacy and reputation.

Like many, your business may have started with a simple dream - to support a family, build stability and create something meaningful.

But what I know to be true, with the family businesses I work with, is that they are often established businesses with proven capabilities and loyal clients.

You employ people.
You support communities.
You deliver exceptional service.
You want to continue to grow, evolve and excel.

However, when your brand undersells what you have built - making it look less established, less professional and less experienced than it really is - your business is being underestimated.

When you should be able to show up with more confidence, capability and professionalism as the business behind it.
