Congratulations to Emmet from Emmett 4 Animals on his Australia Day awards nomination. This is a great cause to get behind!
Where do I begin?
There are so many feelings I want to express in this message. Gratitude... Appreciation... Humility. But thankfulness is the emotion which was, and still is, so prominent within me.
I am thankful for the support of my junior school teachers and mentors for nurturing the spark within me for change and pushing me to my potential, whilst assisting where necessary. I am thankful for the people within the animal welfare industry who paved my path in the beginning of our journey - teaching me, mentoring me and guiding me through the rough times, while savoring the good. I am thankful for my family and friends - the relentless support, unconditional love and genuine drive for change. Their capacity to bring joy in the darkest of moments is unrivalled, and their guiding flame has lead Emmett4Animals to the place it is today. And most importantly, I am thankful for our Mackay community. Thank you for sharing your time, money and animal food with us. I cannot begin to place a metaphor on how much I am grateful for your kindness and generosity. The collective work of the Mackay region has raised cats from a poor life, saved dogs from euthanasia and instilled smiles and happiness to many more animals. Your small gesture, your one can of animal food or your afternoon of help is felt. Not only by us here at Emmett4Animals, but all the starving, lost or abandoned animals of Mackay. They are the unheard voices. And you... are making them heard.
There was little part of me, at age 5, that thought I would be standing and addressing the Mackay community as a whole, after being recognised on such an extraordinary scale on behalf of my charity, Emmett4Animals. Nowhere did it say that a simple action could lead such a monumental change. No one told me to do it... There was an issue, and I attempted, through effort and determination, to make a positive change in my world. Recognition was not expected with accepting the Emmett4Animals mission. This though, is what makes me humble, thankful, grateful and appreciative of being the 2021 Young Citizen of the Year.
Without getting overly sentimental... *wipes tear from eye*... Emmett4Animals would not be at the current place it is without the support of the Mackay community. Despite the corny nature... it is 100% true. You're kindness and generosity is unrivalled and I could not be more thankful to live in city which exhibits just that.
Emmett4Animals has big goals for the 2021 year. Changes. Ideas. And plans. However, we will still strive for our mission to support lost and abandoned animals of Mackay.
Remember, kindness wins.
