🚨 Australia just tightened the rules on three major visas: Student (500), Graduate (485), and Working Holiday (WHV).

Here's what changed after Tony Burke's National Press Club address:

📌 New 500 & 485 visa applications can no longer include a partner or children as dependents. Exceptions apply for Pacific and ASEAN nationals, and PhD/research students.

📌 Students can no longer downgrade to a lower level course on the same visa.

📌 WHV 2nd & 3rd year applications now face a cap, likely by ballot. Processing has already slowed since July.

📌 Visitor (600) visas will carry Condition 8503 (no further stay), blocking onshore transfer to another visa.

Important: none of this applies retroactively. If you're already in Australia on one of these visas, your current conditions stand. The changes apply when you apply new, renew, or switch visa subclass.

🚨 The Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning) has just been suspended for new international student enrolments.

The diploma has been shut down to new international student enrolments after the government found it was being used by some students to switch study paths and extend their stay in Australia, rather than for genuine study.

📊 Transfers into the course jumped from 510 in 2020 to 4,000 in 2025, with 77% of those switching already studying in Australia.

✅ Students currently enrolled can finish their studies
🚫 No new international students can be recruited into the course

This is the first time the government has used its new course-cancellation powers, and it's part of a wider push to bring net overseas migration down from around 300,000 a year toward a target of 225,000 by 2028.

VETASSESS is increasing fees for Professional Skills Assessments from 9 September 2026.

The new fees apply to Full Skills Assessment, Priority Processing, Skills Assessment Support, Chinese Qualification Verification, non-migration skills assessments, and administration fees. Trade occupation assessments are not affected by this change.

Here are the key changes:
📌 Full Skills Assessment: $1,096 → $1,146
📌 Priority Processing: $825 → $863
📌 Points Test Advice (non-VETASSESS occupations): $311 → $325
📌 Post-Vocational Education Work Visa (subclass 485) Assessment: $416 → $436
📌 Reassessment (within 12 months): $745 → $779
📌 Appeal (within 90 days): $1,082 → $1,132
📌 Renewal of Skills Assessment (within 3 years): $473 → $495

Applications submitted before 9 September 2026 will still be charged at the current rate.

🚨 Northern Territory (NT) Skilled Migration 2026-27 is here!

Nominations for subclass 190 & 491 open from 21 August, and NT has secured the highest number of Subclass 491 places of any state or territory in Australia.

📊 Allocation breakdown:
✅ Subclass 190: 850 places (same as last year)
✅ Subclass 491: 1,000 places (+200 from last year, +25%)
✅ Total: 1,850 places (up from 1,650)

💡 What's opening on 21 August:
All onshore streams reopen for new applications
Select offshore streams also open - NT Priority Occupation stream closed due to a large backlog of pending applications. NT Job Offer & Family streams are still open.

📌 Good to know:
NT still requires a strong commitment to live and work in the Territory for at least 3 years post-grant.
Processing times aren't guaranteed before visa expiry, so keep your skills assessment and English test results valid throughout.
