Part 6 of Marielle's story.
She had never met them in person.
Twelve months of online Masters study seems to build a kind of intimacy. You end up knowing someone's intellect, their typical questions, their silence when they're thinking, the way they produce under pressure. But you actually don't know how they occupy "space". You've never sat across a table from them or stood chatting outside somewhere.
So Marielle's three-day Sydney trip was the first in-person gathering of her study cohort. It was planned to be a weekend of workshops, dinners, and probably a little accumulated awkwardness of strangers who only know each other in a particular way.
Marielle isn't someone who gets nervous about professional situations. She navigates boardrooms and construction sites with genuine composure, being very used to those scenarios. But she mentioned that she REALLY wanted to get this one right.
Not to impress, that's not the right word.
To fully present as herself, not as one of her "persona"s. And without the usual stress and negotiation between who she is, what she's wearing, appropriateness for occassion, too much/too little, etc.

Her wardrobe had been carefully rebuilt since the audit. I'd describe it as cohesive, yet versatile. Full of variation, yet streamlined. So now every addition is intentional and an item must carry its weight, so to speak. No more clothing "orphans". Marielle is learning what it feels like to open a wardrobe and not experience the low-grade friction of too many decisions, too much visual noise.
Apparently, the Sydney cohort, just as she suspected, was full of accomplished men and women who had already been building their own versions of their public selves and their professional presence. Sure, there were a few that seemed a little lost and their presenting identity still under development, but by-and-large the group looked like people who knew exactly who they were and what was in their future.
And Marielle was prepared. She arrived with exactly what she needed. Not more.
She sat across that restaurant table and felt, for the first time in a long time, entirely herself AND entirely dressed for it.
