Concerned about your child’s eating habits? Watch EDFA’s Nourish Nurture Notice Masterclass using the link below.
Did you catch last night’s episode of Parental Guidance on Channel 9? It explored body image and eating disorders, with a strong focus on how these issues affect girls.
While this is an important conversation, eating disorders don’t always look the way people expect, and boys can be just as vulnerable, though their experiences often go unnoticed.
When it comes to boys, eating disorders and body image concerns can show up as an obsession with gym routines or muscle gain, driven by pressure to look a certain way, or extreme “clean eating” habits. These behaviours are often driven by pressure to look a certain way and can mask serious underlying issues.
In fact, research has shown that one in five adolescent boys are currently experiencing disordered eating, with many experts believing the number is actually much higher. Unfortunately, stigma and outdated stereotypes still prevent many boys and their families from recognising the warning signs or reaching out for help.
That’s where Eating Disorders Families Australia’s (EDFA) Nourish, Nurture, Notice program comes in. Designed by body image and clinical experts as well as parents and carers who draw on their own experiences caring for their child with an eating disorder, the online program equips schools, sports clubs, families and communities with the tools and knowledge to identify the early signs of disordered eating and respond with compassion and confidence.
The online Nourish, Nurture, Notice program is completely free. You can access it on-demand now.
