Kids growing up in the Baby Boomer era were pretty inventive. Games would be simple like 'brandy' where all you needed was a single tennis ball and all the kids in the neighborhood could join in and play. There was hopscotch, all you needed there was a piece of chalk or 'red rover all over', nothing needed, just a group of kids. The girls played knuckle bones with the knuckles saved from the Sunday roast, boys played marbles in the dirt. We used to play until it got dark and mum would be yelling out for us to come and have tea (wasn't called dinner in those days).
If you saved the old jam tins, run a piece of string between them to make a 'phone' or attach some rope and make stilts. No Gameboys, no iPads, no Wii tennis...how on earth did we get through and have a happy childhood?
