Would you like to know five common mistakes to avoid when you create your Marketing Strategy for your small business? With 2025 just around the corner, these tips will help you develop and create a better 2025 Marketing Strategy

5 Common Mistakes to Avoid
1. Thinking your marketing strategy and your marketing plan are the same thing. They aren’t! They are two different, critical-thinking pieces in your marketing. Your marketing strategy is your big picture, game plan. It helps you know where you are at now and where you want to go. Your marketing plan are the actions, the tactics, the ‘To-do’ list of how you are going to achieve your strategy.

2. Not knowing where to start. Start with your objectives. What do you want to achieve and by when. If you are struggling with stating your objectives try writing down what you DON’T want to do first. This helps your focus.

3. Not sure which customers to target. Too broad a target audience lacks focus and clarity. Focus on 2-3 target audience groups that would be interested in your product. Not sure about the groups you choose? Back this up with some research or feedback: ask people for their thoughts.

4. Analysing your business but not being transparent and honest with the analysis. No point orchestrating your business position. Face the facts about what is working well or not working well.

5. Analysing but not assessing the opportunities. Be SMART!

S – Are the opportunities specific and clearly defined?
M – Are the opportunities measurable against your targets and business goals?
A – Are they achievable and likely to succeed? What are the likely costs?
R – Are they relevant to the business goals?
T – How much time will it take to implement some of these opportunities?

An excellent guest panel for the Campbelltown Chamber of Commerce July Dinner event last night.

- Gerry Kenneally, Kenneallys Funerals
- Greg Warren State MP
- Shaun Mielekamp, GM Community Foundation & Alumni at Wests Tigers Rugby League Football Pty Ltd

A brief snapshot of some of the points covered:

⚪ Gerald emphasised the importance of community involvement in driving business growth in Campbelltown. He noted that businesses must adapt to changing market conditions as well as leverage and support the abundance of local resources. With over 40 years of experience in small business, Gerald has many learnings and stories to share.

⚪ Greg discussed the state government's role in supporting business growth locally, mentioning incentives and programs designed to foster a thriving local business environment. Greg encouraged local businesses to reach out to him at any time.

⚪ Shaun elaborated on promoting collaboration within the community, outlining how businesses can contribute through sponsorship initiatives.

Shaun also introduced the 'Empower' program - an innovative collaboration between Tigers, local businesses and community, to create positive impact across several areas including domestic violence and youth social well-being. Six schools, in both Concord and Campbelltown are currently involved in the initial program rollout. This was particularly exciting to hear as my kids' school is involved in the program.

Great to see many new faces as well and some returning faces Sokka Ung, Achim Schenk Fion Wong Ashley Smith Sarah Willoughby

Are you stuck in a ‘Once in A Lifetime’ loop?

Ever been guilty of scrolling through social media, mindlessly clicking "Like" on posts, and suddenly realising you've spent an hour without any clear purpose or direction?

Or perhaps you have been caught in content creation, networking or a bunch of other marketing activities because that is what everyone else is doing.

Inspired by a post on LinkedIn today (Kevin D. Turner) about LI’s birthday, and how we are here 21 years on, it made me think about the song by Talking Heads "Once in a Lifetime"

David Byrne from Talking Heads described the song lyrics as an unconscious drift, where "We operate half-awake or on autopilot and end up, whatever, with a house and family and job and everything else, and we haven't really stopped to ask ourselves, 'How did I get here?'" (Wikipedia)

Many of us experience this personally in our lives. But we can also extend this to our business and our marketing strategy or lack of.
..”And you may ask yourself”: Is my marketing living on autopilot?

🔵 If you don’t understand the direction of your marketing - your strategic objectives, your goals, your target audience,

🔵 If you have a bunch of marketing ideas and thoughts swirling around in your head,

Then ask yourself:

👉 Does my marketing have direction?
👉 Is my marketing purposeful, effective, and measurable?
👉 Am I chasing the next best marketing trend?

Marketing and social media is a rat race. It's easy to slip into a routine where we just "do" without stopping to ask, "How did I get here?"

Like the song, this unconscious approach can lead to a disconnect between our marketing actions and our intended business and marketing goals.

With a little thinking time, marketing strategy and planning can provide you and your business with a roadmap to avoid this trap.

Instead of mindlessly posting content, following your competition or chasing the latest marketing trend, focus on YOUR business and YOUR marketing objectives.

👉 What do YOU want to achieve?
👉 Who is YOUR target audience,
👉 How can YOU best reach them?

I have an easy (and free) One-Page Marketing Plan, to help you achieve this.

You only have "Once in a Lifetime” to make your marketing effective.

Ready to take your LinkedIn to the next level but unsure where to start?

Start with getting your LinkedIn profile right.

Here are 5 simple steps to get your profile looking its best.

1. Harness your Headline
Your LinkedIn headline is like a digital first impression – make it count! Use keywords relevant to your industry and profession.

2. Banner Brilliance
Your banner is like an extension of your website – so why leave your banner grey? Use Canva’s LinkedIn Banner templates.

3. Amplify your ‘About’ Section
Talk to your target audience - whether that is a recruiter or potential clients. Write in the first person. Provide an introduction, your professional background, what is unique about you, and end with a call to action

4. Super Skills
List out your skills. Ask clients and colleagues for recommendations and endorsements.

5. Winning Work Experience
Avoid the CV approach. Write with your target client in mind.

Did you see the population of Australia’s capital cities grew over 500,000 in the year ending June 2023?

The largest annual growth recorded by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Melbourne up 167,500

Sydney up 146,700

The two Capitals with the biggest increase in 2022-23

💥 Australia! We are booming!

There are advantages to this growth.

What does this mean for your business and your marketing strategy?

Here are some marketing strategy ideas to take advantage of and leverage the changes in population growth.

1. Target Aging Population: With an increase in the aging population, focus your products and services towards this market, such as healthcare, retirement planning, senior living facilities, and leisure activities.

2. Develop Multigenerational Marketing: Consider campaigns that appeal to multiple generations within families, especially with the growing trend of multigenerational households amid the housing crisis.

3. Identify regions experiencing significant population growth. Can you tailor your marketing efforts to meet the needs of the expanding local population? This could involve opening new stores, new advertising campaigns, or offering community-specific promotions to new migrants.

4. Diversity and Inclusion. With increasing cultural diversity in our community, consider prioritising diversity and inclusion in your marketing strategy. Represent diverse demographics in advertising, incorporate multicultural themes, and consider new opportunities for products/services that resonate with different cultural backgrounds.

What are you doing to take advantage of the rise in population growth? Not sure!

Book a 15 min chat with me to discover how I can help you take advantage of this population growth specific to your business.

There is a plague afflicting small businesses - Shiny Glittery Object Syndrome, (SGOS).

This common condition is causing high levels of distraction, leading businesses astray from achieving their goals and business success.

SGOS Symptoms to watch out for in your business:

1. Constantly distracted and feeling of overwhelm - A whirlwind of ideas with no clear focus, leaving you unsure where to begin. Possibly making you feel flustered, unsure and overwhelmed.

2. Spaghetti Marketing - Haphazardly throwing marketing ideas at the wall, hoping something sticks.

3. Imitating Competitors - Losing sight of your brand identity, your unique position or copying the products/services of your competitors.

4. Scattershot Tactics - Using "spray and pray" marketing with no clear target, strategy or measuring the effectiveness of your marketing.

SGOS impacts your business health
SGOS diverts your attention from your core objectives and strengths,
SGOS hinders your growth and success.
SGOS causes your marketing to become disjointed

There are remedies to treat SGOS. Start with these options:

1. Strategic Planning - Develop a well-thought-out marketing strategy that aligns with your business goals.

2. Identify Your Unique Selling Points - Understand what differentiates you from the competition and why.

3. Stay Grounded - Resist the allure of shiny distractions or constantly looking at your competitors.

4. Evaluate and Prioritise - Focus on only a few key projects. Using the SMART principles.

Success is not about chasing after every shiny, glittery ball, but remaining focused on your business goals through developing a clear marketing strategy.

I’d love to share some surprising news with all of you, which I hope will inspire other business owners and content creators.

In January, I was awarded the LinkedIn™️ Top Voice Badge. This recognition came completely out of the blue for me, especially as I have a small following, compared to many other LinkedIn™️ Top Voices.

I never imagined being recognised globally. It goes to show that anyone, regardless of their follower count, can achieve great things!

If you are not familiar with LinkedIn™️, there are two types of Top Voice Badges anyone can earn.

1️⃣ Top Voices (Blue Badge): Is an invitation-only program featuring global experts vetted for high trust standards, activity, and valuable content. It was previously known as the Influencer program.

2️⃣ Community Top Voices (Gold Badges): These badges recognise individuals for their expertise in specific skills, showcasing their valuable contributions to collaborative articles. I initially achieved a Top Marketing Strategy Voice. There are about 150 topics where you can earn this Gold Badge.

If LinkedIn™️ is a platform that you use, I want to encourage you to keep pushing forward with your own content. Don't underestimate the impact of your content – you never know where it might lead!
