In the first quarter of 2023, Australian start-ups received the lowest amount of funding and recorded the fewest number of deals since 2019, according to a new report. Further, a survey of investors suggests that the valuations of Australian scale-ups have fallen by as much as 50% and may continue to decline.

As budgets tighten and layoffs continue, is this a sign that the Australian start-up sector is in trouble? Or are we witnessing a market correction after the massive growth and availability of capital during the pandemic years? How do you think startups and investors should be responding to the current macroeconomic climate?

A new survey of Australian family offices and venture capital firms has painted a dire financial picture for the nation’s tech start-ups.

AI is the word du jour and the pitfalls of the rapidly emerging tech is a hot topic amongst industry and government.

More than 1000 AI experts, including Elon Musk and ANU's Professor Seth Lazar, released an open letter this week calling for a 6-month industrywide pause on the training on sophistcated AI systems. The letter suggests time is spent implementing a set of shared, peer-reviewed safety protocols developed with government.

But for some industry experts, these calls put the democrastisation of the technology and the precarious geopolitical climate at risk.

Would a haitus allow industry to catch up with safety risks or accelerate a technology monopoly? Is AI a "risk to the future of human civilisation"? Was this post written by a chatbot?

We call on all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4.

“A new cyber and infrastructure security group will be created on May 1, under the leadership of Hamish Hansford in a new deputy secretary position,” announced Home Affairs Secretary Mike Pezzullo.

The group will be supporting Clare O’Neil and the cyber security coordinator (pending appointment) and take a leading role in “scenario-based exercises, stress tests and so on; as well as cyber incident response and coordination in support of the coordinator.”

As we deal with the fallout of the Latitiude Financial breach (which may be the largest in Aus history), will these efforts help Australia to become the most cyber secure country by 2030? Will increased government attention slow down criminal activity? What do you think is needed to address increasing cyber risk?

A ban on the use of TikTok on all Australian government devices is expected to pass as Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil completes her review of a report into security concerns around data harvesting and potential Chinese government access to the social media app.

Several politicians, including Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek, NDIS Minister Bill Shorten and West Australian leader Mark McGowan, have attracted large followings on TikTok. Will Australia follow the US, the EU and New Zealand in banning the app from government devices, and if so, what will be the implication for TikTok’s use in Australia more broadly?

Federal cabinet ministers, premiers and independent MPs are using burner phones to use the Chinese-owned app TikTok, which a review is expected to recommend banning from all official government devices.

Ensuring we have the STEM skills pipeline to fulfil our ambitious appetite for innovation is a perpetual challenge – one that was highlighted again this week with the news of Australia’s $368b future fleet of nuclear-powered submarines under the AUKUS pact.

This is a risk facing many emerging industries: we want and need to develop these game-changing industries and sovereign capabilities, but do we have the right frameworks in place to ensure we have the skilled workers to make our dreams a reality?

Analysts warn that Britain and Australia may need to in effect alternate the production of the subs if there are not enough workers to go around.

Today marks International Women’s Day (IWD) – a powerful, yet at times controversial movement.

We want to hear your views on IWD. How will it be viewed in years to come? Many think women should be celebrated more frequently than one day a year - but is it still valuable to mark this significant day as a reminder of female achievement, leadership and progress?

IWD can also provide a platform for important issues to surface, for example, Technology Council of Australia chief executive Kate Pounder says there are long-term structural issues keeping the number of women in technical roles in the sector frustratingly low – read more below.

Following a year of high-profile cybersecurity breaches of Australian companies, the government’s plans to develop a new cybersecurity strategy is welcomed by many across the economy.

With the strategy team being led by high-profile names in the cyber industry, is this the shakeup Australia needs to wake up from it’s “cyber slumber”? Can Australia become a global cyber leader with the systems in place to help us successfully defend against both offshore attacks and homegrown security threats?

New strategy to be developed by top cyber security experts aims to turn Australia into a global cyber leader, among other goals.
