Attribution is dying. Long live incrementality.
That was the real story at B&T's Breakfast Club last week, "The Incrementality Reality," presented by Rokt. Also on the menu: spanakopita, further proof that some things don't need incrementality testing to know they work.
The panel (Nathan Crook of Ticketmaster, Ankita Jain of Foxtel Group and Michael Dunlop of Rokt) was masterfully moderated by B&T's Tom Fogden, who put it best: "the biggest risk is to not take risks."
For anyone building a brand or protecting a reputation, that's not just a media-buying insight. It's a positioning one. If you can't prove causal impact, you can't defend budget and you can't defend the narrative you're telling stakeholders about what's working.
Three things worth taking back to your own team:
• Attribution tells you what happened. Incrementality tells you what wouldn't have happened without you.
• Commerce media is no longer a channel. It's becoming the discovery layer, and it changes where the "next dollar" should go.
• Proof before scale isn't caution. It's how you earn the right to take the next risk.
Rooms like that don't come around often: three subject matter experts who rarely share a stage, all early risers, all sharp before 8am.
Great breakfast, better conversation and we all went home with a box of chocolates. Forrest Gump said life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get. Incrementality is how marketers are making sure they do.
