To celebrate International Wombat Day, we wanted to take the opportunity to introduce you properly to our furry little friends.

Fact 1: Yep, you read that correctly. Wombats have a backward-facing pouch. Like many animals, the wombat pouch is a haven for babies to grow and develop further, but with the distinct difference of opening toward the mother's rear. If Mum decides to go on a digging frenzy, little Joey is protected from all the dirt. How clever is that!

Fact 2: Helloooo, down there! Wombats construct long, deep burrows to escape the heat and hide from predators. These burrows can be up to 100 feet long and are usually situated above creeks and gullies with multiple entrances. The burrow, also known as a warren, can have up to 8 animals living in it at any given time!

Fact 3: Now, you probably thought that the backward-facing pouch was unique only to the Wombat, but you would be wrong. Koalas, who are the closest known relative to the Wombat, have the same surprising, yet practical, pouch design.

Fact 4: Let’s be real; these stocky marsupials look about as fast as an Olympic weightlifter, but don’t be fooled by their thick appearance! They can run at speeds up to 40 kilometres per hour. That is just under retired sprinter Usain Bolt’s fastest recorded speed. Zoom Zoom!

Fact 5: With a backside second only to , you don’t want to mess with these bootylicious badasses. Wombats have even been known to crush the skulls of their predators with one swift blow from their bottom. Yikes!

Fact 8: Unsurprisingly, wombats do not have a super fast metabolism - and there is good reason! All herbivores have long digestive tracts to allow more opportunities for nutrient extraction and absorption.

CHECK THE RAYS - SUMMER SUN CAMPAIGN. The Fat Wombat x Cancer Council Queensland (CCQ) collaboration imagines a culture where young Queenslanders actively promote and celebrate sun safety. Our mission was to help Australia drop the informal title of skin cancer capital. Mission accepted.

CCQ’s Everyday Health Survey showed that 52% of people are unaware that specific sun protection is required if the UV Index level reaches three or above. Additional research shows that more than 95% of skin cancer cases are caused by unprotected exposure to UV radiation from the sun. This is a nearly entirely preventable cancer, with simple sun protection as your best defence.

We kicked off this project with a reconnaissance phase, focused on location scouting, talent casting and extensive consumer research. We worked closely with CCQ to build this highly emotive campaign targeted at young Queenslanders.

To effectively engage with this audience, the message needed to be light-hearted and playful while subtly but clearly delivering the core steps underpin CCQ’s sun safety messaging: Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide when the UV index is three or higher.
